I think there's something to be said for doing it on your own with minimal help. I'll graduate university with $20,000 in student loans and nothing to my name except a 10 year old car. My dad and mom worked very hard as well. My dad came to Canada when he was 19. Did civil engineering and had his machinist journeyman ticket. Had diabetes and unfortunately died when I was 19(he was 49).
My mom did labor. We were middle class.
My brother is the one who helped me out overall

I agree. I don't ever really plan on having kids so I consider myself lucky in respect to the fact that I can work a little less and still retain more income and free time than people who do have kids.

Yep, my girlfriend's parents are like that with her. They're very well off but she has to earn everything. The only thing about it that pisses me off is that they've been giving her brother a free ride the entire time.
I'm 23 right now and have been working and living on my own pretty much since I graduated high school, so I've never really had enough money to go to school. I have a couple of uni courses under my belt but I'm finally taking the full-time plunge this year. My dad has said he'll lend me some money for school but that I'm responsible for my living expenses (we live in different cities)and any extra costs (i.e. medical, entertainment, etc.).

Yeah, that's where I was headed but my dad said he'd help me out as long as I got straight As. I'm planning on heading to law school after I'm done my undergrad so I'm sure I'll rack up the student loans.

If you have 600k in cash sitting around and still have to work your butt off, you are doing it very wrong. You should have been able to double that money the last few years.

Consider yourself lucky, that's half a semester at a lot of American schools. I know people who are nearing their 40's and still have $150,000+ school loans on the books......and they went to art school. Good luck paying that one off.
The relatively low cost of education in Canada is one if it's biggest assets imo. You're in a hole when you graduate, but it's a manageable one for most. The size of the hole in the US for most grads is akin to the one last month in Guatemala.

I feel like someone is having their own conversation in this thread. I don't believe I have anyone on ignore it just feels like there is one person tooting their own horn... ah well.
Put me in the group of never owning expesnive shoes. I am wearing a pair of Aldo's that I have had for over a year but they need to go. The sole is worn out, the sides scuffed up. I never really paid too much attention to shoes but if people say these high quality ones "last a lifetime" then maybe I should be checking some out.

I have about 1,000km's running on these ugly things.....all for $90  I used to spend a couple hundred bucks every 500km's on other "foot cast" type shoes....Good luck trying to find any in this city though as I bought another pair recently and had a tough time getting them online even...MEC and Fitter are always sold out....ugly but good!

Indeed! Bare foot running is becoming the new fad very quickly. Looks like Nike has a line-up of Free-run runners that are rather inexpensive.

Are you a lifeguard or something? What kind of business allows flip flops and shorts?
I think its possible to find a happy medium. I don't spend huge amounts on clothes but still dress up accordingly at work and when going out. There's a line you can cross and end up spending too much, but its also possible to spend too little and end up with something that is basically crap.

I wear these, and they have to be - without a doubt - the most comfortable flip flops I've ever worn. Super light and comfy, and they stick like glue on rock slab for the outdoors. Best part is I didn't even have to buy them, I won them in a bouldering competition.

My company allows it, and I work at an office job. I don't wear flip flops because I hate wearing them, but if I wanted to, I could wear them everyday to the office and no one would think anything of it. But then again, we're not downtown so maybe that has something to do with it.

I've got you beat, Yen Man. Half the time I don't even wear ANY pants/shorts to the office.
Then again, unless I'm meeting a client, my office is about 2 feet from the couch. Sure makes commuting easy.
