Keep in mind you can still wear high-quality clothing that isn't a suit or dress shoes. I know some people will laugh, but I have $275 dollar jeans that are part of my professional look (for my line of work, totally acceptable).

Obviously things are different if you're a banker.

No, just the people that didn't take engineering. Look, there's a certain personal aesthetic that is important to a good quality and thoughtful life. To me, wearing jeans and a polo shirt with my company's logo on it isn't aesthetic. Neither is dropping $400 on a pair of jeans.

If I want to look classic and wearing manly clothes, that's my business. I'll also not hesitate to say that it looks better than those who consider putting effort into their appearance to be "old and arcane."

I'm not saying dressing like a slob is acceptable. But you can still pull off casual and look good doing it. Cleanliness and being well groomed is more important than expensive suits and fancy shoes IMO.

I think this is acceptable. A dark wash jean looks pretty good in a professional, but casual setting.

The reason I feel dress is important is because it conveys an image of responsibility and discipline.

Why does the military harp so much on dress uniforms? Discipline, leadership, presentation. You want to put this image across to your fellow workers and your bosses. Casual wear to me does not convey this image. That's all i'm trying to say.

I understand corporate cultures are different. And you need to sort of blend in with that otherwise you will stick out like a sore thumb. I just feel as though we have a responsibility to look nice to the place you go every day, not only for your own sake, but the people around you as well and all those you interact with on a daily basis.

Well, for one, i'm in a business environment, and just because it is somehow now acceptable to wear those types of clothes, doesn't mean you should.

People judge you based on how you dress. Everyone does it. If you meet someone nicely dressed, your opinion of them is most likely higher because they took the time to look that way. Any slob can throw on a pair of jeans.

Style is dressing nice when you don't have to. Wearing a tie when you don't have to.

I will progress in my career. But I don't expect to wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Not saying that you can't, but professional people need to look professional.

Lastly, I want to wear these clothes. Most people I talk to say they hate dressing up. I love it. It makes me feel good. You exude confidence when you know you look good. People compliment you. It's not an ego thing, but it's something you can take pride in.

I made a choice in dressing this way. I actually dressed in jeans and a tshirt for 3 years at this job before I switched my style a bit. At first a lot of people said WTF? But they are used to it and when a client comes in, I can meet them with confidence because I am dressed for the occasion instead of a raggy old shirt.

Every good wardrobe starts at the shoes. You need a good foundation. A $1,000 suit with $80 Aldo shoes look like crap. Maybe most people can't tell. I can, and I guarantee anyone who has spent money on quality clothes, such as your boss or the guy who is interviewing you can tell as well.

I take pride in my dress, and I feel as though more men should as well.
I don't mean this in a negative way, but that is fine if you are a careerist. I would like to earn/save/invest enough to let me retire early and enjoy more time with family, hobbies etc. The incremental cost of wearing and maintaining expensive clothing throughout a career will set you back 10s of thousands behind me. Now obviously you see a trade off in potential higher earnings based on your professional attire, but I personally don't think it's the best strategy.

Honestly, if we would all just have to dress like we were on Mad Men, I'd be totally for it. You'd never have to think about the way you dressed, the rules would be the same for every man, and no matter what, and as a society we'd look pretty sharp.

The problem comes when people try to out do each other, or show their personality.....

I also have a lot of friends who went to Stanford GSB and Berkeley/Columbia Haas that are jeans and t-shirt at work.

I think it's more to take away your sense of individuality so you fall into line, accept orders and think of the group above yourself. The fact that you look spiffy is secondary.

You really think that this is about rank and order kind of conformity?

I think military dress is about conformity, yes. Did you read what I quoted?

I have a couple nice suits and shoes but I rarely wear them. I would wear my ensemble to work all the time but they would get absolutely destroyed in my current line of work. I can't afford to replace nice pants/shirts all the time when a chemical burns a hole in them .

People who dress extremely casually (tshirts and jeans) have no idea how cookie cutter they look. There's only so many ways you can pair up a different tshirt with a different pair of sneakers.

Hey so I picked up a pair of those 5.10 Moccasyms. You're right, it is a great shoe. I still like evolv for bouldering, but those Moccasyms work for just about everything!
