Actually, the trade is warming up to me. I see it as:
Out
Zadorov
In
3rd and a 5th
3.5 million in cap space
Moving up from 16th in the draft to comfortably inside the top 10 with Oesterle and/or Desimone being fixtures on the bottom pairing.
I kid.. I kid... sort of.

I don't know about the greatest move, but I'm pretty fond of it and this was someone who didn't want Zadorov.

Sigh.
The trade wasn’t going to get much more or less than what we got. Zadorov was way more accomplished at talking a good game than he was at playing a good game.
Bye.

Weird timing and gross return. This also makes us worse now as who’s going to take his spot in the line up.

This is a bad trade. It would just be an "okay" trade if is was a 2024 3rd and 5th. I don't care if he's bringing the entire room down. You just need to wait until the trade deadline if you're going to whiff on a trade like this. I guess the only thing that would make me feel better about the 2026 3rd, is if they have knowledge that the 2026 draft will be as good as the 2023rd draft.
Don't make us miss Treliving Conroy. That would be bad.

Doing it today really makes no sense too...do this on Sunday...after you play them.
But yeah I really don't get helping out a divisional rival, 2 days before you play them, for a return that can be deemed acceptable at best, and extremely underwhelming at it's worst.
Getting this return on March 8th...perfectly fine clearly the best return you could get.
Getting this return now before the cap accrual opened up more of a market...unacceptable IMO.

For the record, this is around what I suggest the Canucks would be willing to pay. I am shocked no one else overpaid.

Canucks may have put a clock on it.

Hopefully this opens the floodgates...but other GM's will see this and assume they can fleece us too.

This might true, but if it is then it was smart for him to go public. He gets out like he wanted and his new team required less assets to get him. Win win for Z, should probably be the strategy for everyone who wants a trade.
Compare this with Tkachuk who ironically made his new team worse by providing the Flames with option value in trade negotiations.

Another thought: can we assume that Zadorov not being very good this year affected his trade value?

I'm sure someone else would have overpaid, but the Canucks were just the only ones willing and/or able to clear the salary to make it work

Positive is that he took draft picks instead of retread prospects. Negative is that the return seems lower than what I thought he would get. Positive is that it makes it more likely other UFAs will be traded.

My immediate reaction lines up with most. When I check myself, to be honest I'm not sure what I think a bottom pairing Dman is actually worth, all I know is I'm underwhelmed by the return.
So far in evaluating Conroy:
- I've been impressed with his patience - and if anything this move is a sign he won't push the team in the wrong direction.
- Re: Tofoli trade - I'd say was average at best, but I grow more fond of it each game tbh.
- Z trade - feels like a loss.
As someone else pointed out, the upcoming moves, specifically Hanifin and Lindholm (sign or trades) will be where the rubber hits the road, but starting to get more data points to judge Conroy on.

I don't know. Not loving the trade, but, if the dressing room was really done with him. Might be a good thing to have him playing against us on Sat, extra motivation.

It's a fine trade.
I think he makes a lot of defensive mistakes.
He's not going to help them out there, and fans are going to turn on him real fast.

I do think he’s a better player now than when we acquired him. More responsible, more (though not completely) reliable, still in his 20s. Used to be more of a wildcard. But yes also a pending UFA.
It’s that it’s a ‘26 pick that really bums me out.

This trade sucks and blows at the same time.
If the market is this bad, they should have just held on to him until the deadline and took whatever was available then. It couldn’t be worse than this return…and if somehow it was, I’d probably just hold on and let him walk at the end of his deal.

Or he takes somebodys head off.
If somebody is going to do something ridiculous to hurt somebody i'd take Zadorov over the entire remaining Flames roster.

I think many people may have overvalued Zadorov. This trade is just fine.

Agreed with others. Underwhelmed. Why do it now for peanuts? Might as well wait another month or two and see what you can get. I don't get it.
