Re: the 04 run and how Canada got behind the Flames
I remember the buses in Saskatoon had "Go Flames Go" on their marquee.
And I remember people chanting "Go Flames Go" after Montador scored in OT in game 1 against the Sharks in the Winnipeg Arena as I was meeting Metallica.
i don't think there is anything dumb about being patriotic. Nor is there anything dumb about hoping Bettman and Daly have to present the Cup to the fans of Winnipeg - 20 years after looking the other way and greasing the wheel to allow the team to move to the sunbelt where they could line their pockets with money.
Here's the thing, it's faux patriotism. They're not Canada's team. That's a dumb phrase and it's arrogant. I loathe the Canadian and Albertan flags on the Flames uniforms for that very reason. We aren't Alberta's team, we aren't Canada's team. We're Calgary's team, and quite frankly if/when the Flames are good I don't want the rest of the country piggybacking our success.
How dumb does "I'm cheering for the Oilers because they're also from Alberta" sound? Very. Same thing with any other team and Canada instead of Alberta.

Yeah that's totally reasonable and I don't expect people to cheer for the Jets because they're a Canadian city. But it's a majority opinion. It is what it is.
Canadian teams do see a boost of support in the playoffs - Calgary in 2004, Edmonton in 2006, Ottawa in 2007 and last year. Vancouver was the odd one out though I think in 2010.
But I think this is from more of the casual fan. You don't see people in Calgary supporting Edmonton in '06 (or vice versa in '04) at least not to the level you see in other cities around the Country. I don't think you would see Toronto people supporting Montreal if they went on a run (and vice versa).

A south americans I worked with in calgary while vancouver was in the finals said I should support the canadian team... I told them if vancouver wins they'll riot and if they lose it will be worse. He came to work after that game 7 and apologized and said he will never cheer for vancouver again. He was more canadian after that day

I don't have an issue if people want to cheer for the Jets, but I don't like when people suggest I have to purely because they're a Canadian team.

Screw all other Canadian teams. Cheering for a team because they're based in Canada is dumb.

See this is the stuff that is so silly with Canadian fans. EVERY reason we cheer for teams is "dumb" in that it's just sports. Like Seinfeld said "We cheer for laundry".
You can pick any reason to cheer for any team because sports isn't serious, it's entertainment. This thing where someone will explain the totally legitimate reason that they chose to cheer for a team of millionaires that aren't from the city they play in and then pick a reason why others choose and call it dumb is just........dumb.

I agree, but cheering for Canadian teams is just a little dumber than the rest

The Canucks did not have that sort of country wide support at all, it was basically BC fans and those that hated the Bruins(Montreal area) that rooted for them.
Manitoba was also on the Canucks bandwagon at the time because the Manitoba Moose was the Canucks AHL affiliate
I wasn't paying attention and need a Coles notes answer for;
Hows Vegas set up for long term ?
They did a lot of trades to get future assets - I thought- but I notice don't have many high picks next year. So did their main young prospects already contribute this year or is there an above average wave still to come ?

I dont necessarily have an issue with those fairweather fans but I do think less of them. I am a hockey fan, a fan of the sport. I am also a Flames fan. I hate every other team. Some I hate more than others. Cheering for another team is abhorrent.
