Screw all other Canadian teams. Cheering for a team because they're based in Canada is dumb.

Vegas winning it all would make every GM rethink what a winning roster even looks like. And would embarrass the league to some extent.
I'd like that.
Silence these yappy Thrasherets fans on a Flames forum, they're becoming the Canadian vegans of hockey. The cup doesn't merely belong in Canada. It belongs in YYC, Canada.

I'm not saying winning the SC would cure our political division. I am just saying that in some small way, and for a brief moment, if a large part of the Canadian population got behind the Jets, it may somehow take our minds of the sh**t show going on politically in the country, and remind us that we are all Canadians, and should work harmoniously for a common purpose.
In general, hockey is our Canadian passion as a sport, and I recall the huge outpouring of support across the country for the Flames in 04. Hopefully the same will happen for the Jets.

I agree... but do you dislike them all because they are in Canada? I have no issue with the Jets.

I dislike the Jets because of their fans and the media circus around them. I'm neutral to Ottawa. The other four shouldn't need explanations as to why they're easy to hate.

There are a number of Canadians on the Jets who were born in the US and one who was born in Canada and played in the US. Lowry and Myers were born in the US but have played for Canada, Stasny was born in Quebec city.
Specifically Lowry and Myers have their sweaters up at the Trico Centre so this team is very local to Calgary. They both played for Bow Valley.

I know fans and the media like to push the “what will GMs copy this time” narrative but I don’t think it’s true. And I think the evidence is in the variety of teams that have won the cup, made the finals or even the conference finals.
Remember when the new trend was gonna be no star goalie?
And what happens if Vegas misses the playoffs next year? All those GMs who have shifted their strategies on a whim will just copy whatever else is new?
I think most of this kind of stuff is just finding pieces to fit the supposed narrative instead of teams actually changing their philosophies.

I can honesty say as gross as it would be I would rather the Lightning win. But it would be like watching an Oilers/Canucks game. You're not cheering for one team to win but the other to lose.

Curious if you cheered for the Canucks in 2011?

As I've said all season, there is no way that Vegas can continue this run.
Jets in 6.
I expect to be wrong again with respect to Vegas.

Yes...however as they were one of our main adversaries, not quite as much.

The Canucks did not have that sort of country wide support at all, it was basically BC fans and those that hated the Bruins(Montreal area) that rooted for them.

I dislike the Jets because they were division rivals for the Flames for a decade and a half. Hated them then, hate them now.
For me cheering for the Jets would be the exact same thing as cheering for Edmonton or Vancouver...cause they are based in Canada.
Never.

The 04 Flames became Canada's darlings organically because they were underdogs, they played with heart and grit, and they were led by the grittiest skill guy with a million dollar smile and the most likeable personality. The Red Mile and the girls of the Red Mile didn't hurt the cause.
The new NHL doesn't have that passion anymore (IMO, of course) and the Jets were actually expected to do well. So yeah. Not happening for the Jets.

I think thats where there is a divide, the older Flames fans experienced the Smyth division. The ones that arrived in Calgary after 1996 never experienced that.

The Flames of 04 became Canada's team because this was after a brutal 90's which saw 2 Canadian teams go to the States, and, there was no cap so American teams were buying stars left and right. Canadian fans across the country felt that the Flames Oilers Senators and Canucks were farm teams for big clubs like New York. The Flames going on a Cinderella run was a great story because it gave Canada hope for hockey success. The way they played had very little to do with their popularity. Do you really think the average fan in Hamilton who barely watches noticed the Flames hard working gritty play?

That was the most transparent use of a strawman I've ever seen. You may as well not have replied to CroFlames' comment at all for all the discussion value it held..
Also, #### the Jets.

I don't think you know what a Strawman is. His claim was the Flames were popular because of their style of play. I offered my own point of view. Jesus Christ .
