This is the cumulation of years of mismanaging the economy. Reckless spending on ideological initiatives, while at the same time not developing the Canadian economy in the slightest, has led to what I can only presume is a disastrous financial update. Canada has always been a resource extraction economy and the engine of that for the better part of the past century has been focused on fossil fuel extraction and the government has done a relatively good job of cutting out the legs on the industry. I understand that it is a complicated topic and that something needs to be done regarding climate change - but we have moral superiority at the expense of our economy.
Will we as a country be able to support some degree of fiscal restraint in the coming years?
Like what? I've never seen any serious suggestions from the right.
Trudeau is holding a press conference at 2 pm, I think the likelyhood of a prorogued parliment.
The Libs can no longer afford to have the FES read in the house today, it would be a death blow.
Can we finally see Mark Gerrettsen as a cabinet member, there aren't a lot of people left to fill the 9 open roles in the cabinet. Maybe we see Mark as the deputy pm and Finance Minister, I mean if Justin wants to burn down the party on the way down, at least it would be for the memes.
I doubt that Justin is going to resign, he thinks he can save this mess.
Jagmeet has demanded that Justin resign, but won't commit to anything else.
The house is just nasty right now.

I would have agreed a couple hours ago but now i think it happens within the next 6 hours.

I don't know, but a small country falling on their sword to accomplish nothing of practical value other than being morally superior doesn't seem like an effective strategy. I wouldn't oppose subsidies for solar, wind, and nuclear power utilizing the money generated from carbon fuels. As it stands right now it feels as though we are spending an increasingly large amount of the budget on social causes, which can feel like money being dumped into a pit.

Hey! Stop stealing my analogies.
Other than that, yeah, you're absolutely right.

Jeebus - you will reserve judgment on him until after he fails to act differently than he has done his whole career, once he gets into in power?
The carbon tax was never going to be popular, so it literally could not be for optics.
I meant I can judge him as a PM and his policies/governing if and when he get's elected. Being #1 is radically different than being a #2. This goes for politics, business, sports and more.
Pierre will need to change specific things about himself and his government in waiting if he wants to have staying power, I hope he does.
Until such time, we can judge him and the NDP leader on their leadership qualities as opposition leaders.
I will respectfully disagree about the carbon tax.

All of the Ministers left in Trudeau's government continue to claim that the FES is going ahead today and will be shared. We'll see if that will actually happen and how many of these Ministers will stick around if Trudeau does resign instead.
Easy narrative, and the whole "why bother trying to make a dent when bigger countries pollute" argument is an easy one to handwave away an effective policy.
Even China, while it does not have a formal carbon tax as of now, has implemented a national carbon trading market, which serves a similar purpose in regulating carbon emissions by putting a price on carbon. Even some some U.S. states and regions have implemented carbon pricing mechanisms, including carbon taxes and cap-and-trade systems, which are similar in function.
We can "axe the tax", but I wait on baited breath for our better, more efficient, and climate responsible system implemented by our future governing party that will succeed it.

Maybe, and I'm likely wrong. But I can't see Justin wanting this piece of poison paper going out today on top of everything else.
And what's whoever is reading it going to say? Yeah we blew through all of our guardrails, But its all Freeland's fault?
Her letter effectively counter acts anything like that.
What a mess.

It sounds like its going to proceed. Media is in lockup looking at the documents currently. Makes me feel that the liberals will proceed as a "business as usual" decision.
CBC Update discussing rumours. Trudeau might not be talking today now

Study after study shows that carbon taxes are both effective and have minimal impact on consumers. Why are people still pretending otherwise?
It isn't only about the consumers and carbon taxes - looking further upstream the lack of stability puts businesses into a difficult position where there is uncertainty regarding resource development and extraction of natural resources.
On a larger scale we seem to be unable to get out of our own way so large reserves can't be transported to international markets. Instead, we have to hear about how every special interest group is intent on saying that it damages their way of living, from the hereditary chiefs to the mayor of Montreal. The problem is that every one of those special interest groups also has their hand out asking for more money that just isn't there because we have become increasingly unfriendly towards development.
