Late to the party, but I really like this trade for the Flames. I can't wait to see what this scouting department (which I really think is one of the, if not the, best in league) can do with three four second round picks (three in the top half) in the same draft.

Another reason I like this trade: Jason Bukala says on SN960, that the value of the prospect you're going to get at 40, is very similar to the value of the prospect you're going to get at 25 in this particular draft.

Andersson was a second rounder who was worth a first. Plus Whitecloud, Wiebe and a 2nd.

Lets hope the flames get better at finding some gamers in the second round. From my point of view there is some promising picks in the second round we have made in the last coupe of years however historically the flames have struggled with second round picks aside from the 2016 draft.

1st goal at ~1:15 and 2nd at the end of the video. Also may have assisted the first goal.

https://youtu.be/nEo8yMoBT1w?si=mGneKbY_3iD6D27Z

In on the goal with a one timer rebound at ~25 seconds and springs his linemate for the OT goal

Honestly I wasnt messing around, I feel like he plays similar to hage, maybe not quite as elite but he doesn't have the same caliber of team really. Loves to one time in the slot and has good hands. Underrated shot maybe.

I really like castagna.

I noticed only one or two teams that somewhat successfully doing that and they are not the Flames

You need top picks to get out of this mess

Yes, more picks to fill out the roster, Conroy is doing a good job with that

I do agree that they need to hit on some of these 2nds, and the last couple of drafts look promising. I’ve seen this mentioned a couple of times though about 2015 and 2016 being the last time the 2nd round hit for the Flames, and I think based on this season it’s time we put 2020 with Kuznetzov in that category, as he has basically established himself as a top 4 defenseman in his short time in the NHL. I think he’s going to be a huge part of this rebuild on the back end

Despite being around in a tough era for the Flames, I’ll remember Weegar fondly for his time here. He didn’t have to sign here after the Tkachuk trade (he would’ve been a UFA if he waited out the year). Worked hard. Never complained. Seemed to be a good mentor for the younger players.

This said, he’s 32. I still think he has a couple productive seasons left in him, but as fans we’ll look back and be very thankful that his $6.25 million contract is off the books for the 2028-2030 seasons.

The Flames should ideally be turning a corner by then with a number of RFAs to lock down.

As for the return, maybe it’s my years of wasting time on NHL video games, but I love pick quantity trades. Castagna looks intriguing. Maatta has a bit of a reputation as a whipping boy, but he’s eked out a 783 game NHL career so far. I’ve never watched him that closely, so will be curious to see if it’s warranted.

Definitely a win in my books.

Ruck Twins, Chrenko, Elofsson, Klepov, Valentini, Hextall are the most interesting names in that 25-50 range IMO.

Hopefully they can come away with a couple of those guys.

Here is a question. Whats the most times a team has drafted in a single round?

I have been thinking the same thing, and I wonder if this is the view of Flames scouts, that there isn’t much difference between a pick in the 20’s and 40’s in this draft, and they wanted more bullets in the chamber. I think the 3 2nds is historically about a mid first round pick in value, but perhaps this draft it’s a little bit more.

For all we know Utah gave the Flames the option to take the 2026 first or the 3 2nds, and the Flames went with more picks.

Everyone struggles with picks outside the top 15 though, and nobody is nailing anything beyond the first round with any regularity.

The Flames have been very good at drafting outside the top end the last 3-4 drafts compared to their historical ability to get anyone impactful, so there is no reason to believe that is going to change this year. I also would be very surprised if at least some of these picks are not used in upcoming deals as sweetener for a better return or to move up in the draft.

The tank is on and I really hope this also includes Coleman and Kadri so we can finally say the Flames have committed to this fully.

They don't have to draft both twins. I would be fine with just Liam.

I agree - but that points to the 'more bullets' argument.

Take the Canadians - they got Hutson in the 2nd as mentioned - but in the same draft they picked Mesar 26th overall, Owen Beck 33rd overall before him. The next year they picked Reinbacher 5th overall. One pick before Kapenen they took Riley Kidney who is now in the ECHL.

These teams (outside of maybe Dallas) aren't better drafting than anyone else - they just had a bunch of a chances and some hit.

I'm thinking the same. He might not be Whitecloud but if he stays healthy, we might be able to do what the penguins did with Kulak.

I’m fine with return all things considered. The draft capital that is being accumulated is exciting. Build thru the draft!
Flames did try to trade Markstrom early, but he exercised his clause and this is what caused him to want out

Was also interested in that question and this is what I found:

Quote:
Arizona Coyotes (2022): 5 picks in the second round (Picks 32, 34, 36, 43, 45), which technically ties Montreal's single-round volume, though Montreal's feat is the widely cited first-round record
Montreal in 74 picked 5, 7, 10, 12, 15 in the first round.
