Are you telling me that one of the 2nds was essentially a 1st?

|
His 20 goal season was a massive outlier. He has never eclipsed 8 in his career otherwise
He is a 5-8 goal scoring 40ish point D who is above average (historically) defensively who is 32 now and has 5!!!! More years on his contract
The chances he is a top 4 D in his age 35-36-37 seasons is almost zero -
And that’s when the Flames will want to compete and have cap flexibility
Who cares if he bounces back a bit next year - do we really think the market for a 33 year old D with 4 years left is improving that much even with a bounce back year ? Maybe you get a late first instead of the Rangers 2nd?
It’s always better to be too early then too late when moving aging assets

That's a short sighted way of looking at it, imo. The players they traded away are aging players, and they made room for young players that have upside. The Flames wouldn't be contending over the next number of years even if they had held on to those aging players. And you can't force teams to trade you their 1st rounders or blue chip prospects if they aren't interested in doing so.

Really bad work Craig. B-

Look at their resumés.
Parayko has played in 80% more playoff games and has a ring + all his international experience.
Weegar was traded and then his team won two cups. And he’s having an awful year.

Really does feel like they should have been able to get another 1st back overall, from either the Weegar or Tanev trade.
|
The draft is essentially random with a heavy bias for success in the first three picks. So having lots of chances is a great way to counteract the randomness.
The older players traded here are deliberately picked to be supplanted by younger players. They're just fillers for the most part.

Feels like they did better than they should have on the Andersson trade, maybe a little worse on the Weegar trade but kind of evens out.
|
The Tanev deal is probably the most underwhelming in terms of value. I always thought teams should be willing to pay more for him but perhaps injury concerns mitigated the return.
I would rank the deals as follows in terms of relative value
1. Andersson
2. Weegar
3. Zadorov
4. Hanifin
5. Tanev.

How do we know that Conroy, is not going to add one of these pics, to Coleman, or Kadri, for an even better return. Conroy, is not a fool. He has a plan that we need to let him implement.

I think injury concerns were absolutely what killed a better Tanev return. To me the kick in the back was Hannifin.

Even the Carlo trade from last year. 1st + Minten + 4th feels somewhat close to this return and Weegar is way better than Carlo.
I would love to know what San Jose or Detroit would have offered. Because this seems like a strong return if your think Weegar won't bounce back and you're just trying to shed the contract.
But light for a guy who could is a top 30 dman producer at 5v5 the last 3 seasons.
|
Just because posters feel Parayko and Weegar are comparable doesn’t mean that other teams feel that way.
The Sabres could have also made the offer of Mrtka + 1st to the Flames if they wanted to but it seems that they didn’t.
Parayko is very highly rated around the league. He’s a giant of a man. Stanley Cup Champion & Team Canada Olympian.

Hate losing Weegar but love the trade...also frees up even more money for the Makar signing.

Can we have a jersey with Määttä? That would be cool.

Values okay not great.
Feels like 3 quarters, a dime and a nickle when id much rather have a looney.
With that said, the biggest piece we received in this trade is the direction it sends us further towards and im proud of the org for making the tough call.
Common Gavin McKenna! Nothing is stopping this tank train.

That's fair.
Parayko has the size teams want for playoffs, and the playoff experience, and that drives his value up but I still feel like this is selling a little low on Weegar.
Did you hear of any other teams being interested in Weegar and what the other offers might have been?
My worry I think is it happened so quick that it doesn't feel like Weegar was fully shopped around.

I hope we accumulate more 2nd rounders in the kadri and Coleman deals.
How many 2nds must we accumulate in order for them to be the equivalent of the first overall pick?

According to the radio the deal happened super fast, initiated by Utah.

It'll be kinda fun cheering for Weegar and Iginla, not a team I'll dislike untill I have to
Add it to the Tkachuk trade tree

According to pick value charts you'd need pick 33 through 45 to have the equivalent value to the first overall pick.
