|
Doesn't mean the 3rd pairing is playing that little, but I get you're being pedantic.
Truthfully the only person Barrie is knocking out of the lineup will be Pachal.
And the kids who would be in the 3rd pairing would get buried on the road against opposition with last change and likely would play that little on some nights.

I definitely don't want to see him in the top 6, and I'd rather we called up a prospect if any of the top 6 is out for any length of time. I'd rather see what we have in: Solo, Poirier, Grushnikov, and Kuznetsov before they all become waiver eligible next year.
I assume our D is going to be:
Bahl - Andersson
Weegar - Miromanov
Bean - Pachal
Hanley, Barrie
|
All those guys mentioned, either need PP time or PK time. Who would they displace to take ice time away?
Weegar, Andersson are your PP players. THey will play the PK along with Bahl and I assume Pachal.

Nothing wrong with a young defenseman starting his nhl career on the bottom pairing.

The team has come a long ways in it's approach from where it was but still can't help but fill out roster spots with vet signings instead of leaving them for the young talent were developing.
|
It will be just to start the season. Huska even said the audition period goes weeks into the season. When some of these players that are knocking on the door get their opportunity in the NHL, they may not stay to the end of the season. A partial NHL season at the start of the season or later on in the season will mean similar things to their development. Losing a potential asset like Pelletier because they rush a prospect who turns out to be not quite ready for a full season in the NHL would be a mistake. I think they should give Pelts some games to begin the season to see how he'll do in real games.

^^ When he's ready. But if people want Bru to hop from the OHL to a few games in the AHL right to the NHL at that age its asking a lot. Grushnikov doesn't have much more experience either. The Flames can afford to give them time. They might not be likely to see the playoffs but there are very good teams that do have those aspirations that would feast on those poor kids.

|
But prospects when ready rarely just step into top 6/top 3 roles. There's a step in between where they have to get their feet wet in that secondary role.
Were talking about players that have done the time in prominent roles on the Wranglers and now need nhl time.

I think a lot would depend on what's working, and what isn't. For example if PP2 goes cold, why not give Poirier a couple of tries instead of Andersson. If Weegar is a bit banged up during the game then Poirier gets some time on PP2 after Andersson moves up. We also used 2 D on PP2 for parts of last year.
As far as the PK. Bahl and Pachal are going to be the ones taking penalties. So half the time you're down to Bean or Miromanov taking shifts. I think that Solo, Kuznetsov, or Grush would be good fits as the 5th D for PK.

Brz would see very little PP time in the NHL and he projects to be a good PP quarterback. He needs minutes playing in the top 2 or 4 against greater competition than he played last year - that's the AHL.

It's a lot better to get them playing, and get into a groove of playing minutes, getting touches on the PP so when we do call them up when guys get shipped out they are not cold.
Sitting on the bench does nothing for development. Having your confidence crushed as we get caved in is not good for development.
The team in March is going to look a lot different.
