good on you St.louis.
I just don't think either player is that good.

Although the Oilers want to match both, I think they can realistically afford to only match Holloway and let Broberg walk.

Matching both will essentially kill the chance of extending Pissy.

Thats fine. I believe that theres a lot of upside to Broberg that just wasnt going to get tapped in Edmonton with how they build their team. On the Blues or Flames? Exciting prospect

I do wonder if Bowman getting named the GM pushed this into reality

My vote is matching both and then finding a suitor to trade Kulak or Ceci + sweetener.

History is on the side that the Oilers suck at drafting. I think the Blues just overpaid a Valimaki type guy in a huge way. The Holloway one is a decent gamble at that AAV but I'll be surprised if the Oilers don't match.

PuckPedia is showing the Oilers currently at $95.2M in cap hit vs a cap limit of $88.0M (-$7.2M). If both are matched, that's an extra ~$6.9M added which puts them at approximately $102.1M (-$14.1M).
Puckpedia is including these offer sheets already, so they would be at $95.2M with Holloway and Broberg signed.

Which means even with Kane on LTIR ($5.1m) and another 2 bodies sent down (Derek Ryan: $900k, Stechher: $800k) they'd still be over the cap to start the season ($7.2M vs $6.8M)

In reality they can't really afford to match either, unless they can move out Ceci or Kulak. And I'm sure the asking price for that just went up in terms of teams taking on their contracts.

And Oilers already don't have their 2025 1st or 2nd to facilitate moving out a contract. Really letting Broberg walk and adding a 2nd has to be the decision for them.

Holloway is the cheaper player to keep but they could potentially let him walk and have Matt Savoie take his spot.

Matching both would likely be really difficult Linder the current cap structure. Allowing both to walk is likely the smartest move but still a loss for the organization now and in the near future. Not sure which way they go but it’s pretty much a lose-lose situation. Excellent outcomes for flames fans.

Yeah letting Broberg go for a second will be tougher on the Oilers because they have a fair bit invested in him. Holloway is a lot more expendable. But even if they let him go, they will be hard placed to find a #6 defenceman for this season in their price range.

The Hooloway value is around what I expected a team might try in an offer sheet. But this Broberg one is at least a million North of what I thought someone might pay. So this is a real poison pill.

I thought offer sheets did not happen? Smart move by the Blues.

Do they have enough space to match both and then make a trade? I know they can go 10% over the cap in the offseason but do they have enough cap space to still be below that threshold if they match both offers? Or would the trade have to happen in the next 7 days to make it work?

What kind of cost would it be for the oilers to trade Kulak or Ceci? Would they have to include a 2nd round pick or would it be more (a first round pick)? If it’s a 2nd round pick, they likely do something like that. If it’s more, I think they let them walk.

I'm sure both players are thrilled at the idea of getting out of Edmonton. I'll always remember his reaction at the draft. I'm sure he's got his own Jobu doll set up right now hoping the Oilers don't match.

They already have two that can take the #6 spot. Brown is at 1M and Stecher is at $787k.

Step 1: Send offer sheets to mess up Oilers cap structure even further and put doubts into the minds of players who think management can assemble and keep a strong roster. Additional benefit: Leon doesn't extend / Oilers can't extend him.

Step 2: Backchannel Leon's team that if he was ever interested in living in St. Louis, there is a large German community.

Step 3: Sign Leon next year to giant contract.

Scenario 2. Oilers match. Flames weaponize their cap space to make room for one of NY, Vegas, Florida, LA or Chicago to sign Draisaitl in free agency. Oilers can’t afford to keep him because they kept Broberg/Holloway. Oilers lose McDavid the following year because Draisaitl leaves.

I imagine they will have their doctors perform some sort of minor procedure that they can document as surgery and pay him to stay away until the playoffs as the league seems to turn a blind eye to this kind of thing.
