I still wish we had given up to a 2nd for Holloway.
But this is a no risk win for the flames. Suck it oilers!

question: Can the oilers trade the players in the interceding week and can the receiving team then match the offer sheet?

This is ideal, you get the offer sheet chaos we all hoped for, without petty future retribution looming over the flames if they did it.

Meh, I personally believe that hometown boy Holloway could have much more to show in a better environment. But, otherwise I agree.

I wonder how many text messages Armstrong got with a thumbs up from all the other GMs around the league? At least 10 I would think.
Burke is probably smiling right now too.

Oilers likely match Holloway and just find a garbage D for the bottom pairing. This will get Edmonton scrambling for sure.

I expect they'll match Broberg for sure, but they may let Holloway go.

God I hope this ends up being the extra million or 2 that leads to issues with re-signing McDrai

I think the chance of Broberg getting matched is nearly zero to be honest with you. The contract is just way too much money. Check the UFA signings for $4.5 million, and what it gets you. I suspect they probably let both go, use the second at trade dead, ine to upgrade then. Only guessing though.

I wasn't sure if that only happened once they matched or if they were still tradeable now.

Broberg has wanted out for a while. I doubt he would have got the Oilers more than a second in a trade in the open market. Defensemen can take a while to develop, so he could still pop, but I think the Oilers will cut their losses on him.
I think they will match Holloway. He pushed his way into the line up in the playoffs. With Kane likely LTIR-ed for the season, I see Holloway in a top six role this season with the team.

I guess we'll see, but they really like Broberg, consider him a top-4 guy today, and like his long term potential. They'll do whatever they can to keep him.
Not sure of the liklihood, but certainly greater than zero. I expect it will get done.

I thought NHL players were tripping over themselves with discounted contracts to play with McDavid and Draisaitl? Their two top prospects both signed contracts designed to put the screws to the Oilers. I actually saw a recent post at HF where a poster thinks Drai signs for $12.5 and McDavid $13.5 million. You can't make this stuff up. It's crazy time for that fanbase.

Potentials scenarios:
Scenario 1. Oilers don’t match. Lose good young player(s) and the flames trade for the player(s) for pennies on the dollar one year from now after a handshake agreement with St. Louis to do so in exchange for including full retention on a Coleman trade at the TDL this season.
Scenario 2. Oilers match. Flames weaponize their cap space to make room for one of NY, Vegas, Florida, LA or Chicago to sign Draisaitl in free agency. Oilers can’t afford to keep him because they kept Broberg/Holloway. Oilers lose McDavid the following year because Draisaitl leaves.
Either way… the flames afterwards:

So great, even if they match and make a move to fit them in completely blasts their salary structure.
Also so nice seeing all the smug losers up there who had been obsessed with their Edmonton is awesome and everyone wants to be here at any price narrative take an L
Thank you St. Louis

Broberg goes on the ultimate PDO bender in the playoffs and suddenly the Oilers shills were penciling him in as a bonafide #3 defenceman. In reality he's probably a #6/7.
xG: 34.9% good for last, followed by Ceci at 37.4%
PDO: 110.1 (!!!) good for first, followed by Bouchard at 102.2.

Best-case scenario, in my opinion, is the Oilers match Broberg and let Holloway walk.
Either way, absolutely love this by the Blues. Just by doing this they join the Hurricanes, Bruins, and Panthers as teams I will have lifelong respect for given their contributions to Flames fans.

Well there are actually 4 scenarios, as the Oilers may also choose to match one or the other.
None of the 4 scenarios are very good for Edmonton.
This is a good day.

The NHL equivalent of that would be the flames finishing last in the NHL in 2025-2026. Not a bad year to have the best odds at picking first overall.
