Would the QO screw over the Oilers for signing McDavid?
I don't know about McDavid. If the rumour of Draisatl getting $13.5M is true they need to find $5M above his current salary somewhere. I am sure Bouchard, who also needs to be signed next season is looking across at Nurse and thinking I will need at least $9M also, so another $6M jump.
The Oilers currently are over the cap by $350K with only 21 guys signed.
With there cap situation they will need to sign 9 guys next year with approximately $30M to do so. Draisatl and Bouchard are eating up $21M of that so they will have $9M for 7 guys. If they re-sign Broberg and Holloway then $4.8M of that is gone and they still have to sign 5 guys.
I think they will be in hell for a couple years now.
That Broberg contract is so so so bad. My guess is they match Holloway and let Broberg go. I think it is so funny that Oilers fans are mad that Broberg didn't take a 1.5million AAV to play on the Oilers.

Isn't that the point? If the Oilers match they are paying bums way more than then should be. If they don't, they now have to rely on scouting to fill holes which hasn't exactly worked well either.....

I'm honestly super happy for Broberg. Dude was highly rated ahead of the draft, just was unlucky to be picked by a completely inept organization. Now he not only gets an insane contract, but probably also the chance of leaving Mulletville for good and getting a fresh start. Man must be over the moon and I can't blame him.

I dont kow why ppl think the Broberg offer sheet is bad lmao. for a rebuilding team the cap means nothing and its a two years deal. The only reason anyone would think the Broberg offer sheet is bad is if theyre Oiler fans.
Id have loved it if the Flames signed Broberg to that offer sheet. save a good player from a trash org.
good on you St.louis.

It’s so funny to see that Nurse contract continually crushing the oilers cap structure. The cost to trade him would be enormous and would maybe solve their problems for the next year or two but ruin them for the rest of the potential McDrai years if they re-sign because the oilers would have even less young, cost-controlled players coming into the line up that can contribute. And they will need that desperately if McDavid, Draisaitl and Bouchard re-sign and take up $40 million in cap space.
So trading Nurse will make it so they can keep Draisaitl+McDavid+Broberg… but completely drains their already depleted prospect/pick cupboard which they need for any kind of second swing at contending during the next 8 years. Not trading Nurse keeps them in cap hell every year and it only gets worse if they try to re-sign McDavid/Draisatil/Bouchard.
A peak into HFOil. So much salt and copium mixed together is a dangerous thing.

Go f*** yourself Bowman. What a tire fire. This is why you sign your players.

Easy way out is you trade Ceci and LTIR Kane.

This is on Jackson, not a fan of bowman myself but are we just gonna blame him now every time something goes south? Is bowmann the new scapegoat???

Seriously, why can't it just be easy.

Prudent move here would be to take the pick for Broberg, let the Blues have fun with that qualifying offer, and flip the pick at the deadline.

does this happen if Holland is still at the helm? I'd bet it doesn't.

Selfish move from Broberg. No way hes worth that right now. Playing in debatably the worst city in the league for a non-playoff team instead of with the cup favourites and Mcdavid.

Stan's first f*** up, he needs to fix this as soon as possible.

He would have made more signing a longer deal with the Oilers

Both these players are classic Oilers picks of physical ability far exceeding brains.

Get to f***ing work, this is his first of probably many f*** ups. Also where's the "basically" done Draisaitl contract? Get the f*** on it Stan.

Nurse turning players into cap and offersheet casualties.

Disgusting, and it only nets a second back. we screwed his development up big team. Massive org failure in that front.

Also a secondary f u to the pens in this one, they helped make this happen by trading the second back. It wasn’t hard for them to figure out what might be happening here.

Dubas and Armstrong are co GMs of the Canadian team in the upcoming 4N tournament. Dubas pissed we poached Hyman in free agency.

Oilers gotta match. Holloway and Broberg will be what keep the window open for many more years.

if they werent gonna have a succession plan in place, they shouldnt have f***ed around doing a hiring process for stan bowman instead of getting to business.

You honestly think that if we hired Jesus Christ himself there would be no offer sheet?

Man if I have to spend the year watching Nurse and Ceci just get caved game in and game out, while watching Broberg and Parayko play all the hard minutes successfully for the Blues, f*** will that be infuriating and I will never stop talking about it.

Losing both Holloway and broberg for a 3rd and a 2nd would be mind numbing considering they both would have fetched firsts just yesterday.

Bye bye boys, u sign contracts like that after watching vets take less to win a culture set by mcdavid and Drai they won’t be wanted in that dressing room

I would assume some people think it's bad because you risk throwing your future cap structure out. St Louis has the cap room, but in a year, do their UFAs want more because they're paying 4.5 million dollars to a guy with 81 games?
They went and Signed Arvidsson, Skinner, and Henrique to a combined $10M worth of deals, which is admittedly perfectly good value for those guys. But they invested all their cap space in 3 forwards who are 31, 32, and 34 years old, and now are potentially losing a 22 year old and 23 year old who were top 15 picks for very little in return.
And for Holloway and Broberg the writing is a bit on the wall, even if you break out in Edmonton you're not getting paid by them because all focus will be on Draisaitl, Bouchard, and McDavid.
So most likely outcome is you sign a cheaper deal to stay in Edmonton now...and then end up getting traded anyways (ie. Ryan Mcleod). So might as well cash in now while you can, get more opportunity to play, and probably more opportunity to cash in later.

Blues offersheet Broberg (2 yrs, $4.580 mil AAV) and Holloway (2 yrs, $2.290 mil AAV)
It’s interesting the spot the oilers are in here. I think they would rather keep Broberg as far as organizational need but his contract is the worse of the two and he has shown a desire to leave the organization in the past - plus this re-affirms that sentiment that he may really want out.
Holloway is the cheaper player to keep but they could potentially let him walk and have Matt Savoie take his spot.
Matching both would likely be really difficult under the current cap structure. Allowing both to walk is likely the smartest move but still a loss for the organization now and in the near future. Not sure which way they go but it’s pretty much a lose-lose situation. Excellent outcomes for flames fans.
Assuming Edmonton matches, how does the offseason salary cap work in this scenario? Aren't they only allowed to go 10% over the cap?
PuckPedia is showing the Oilers currently at $95.2M in cap hit vs a cap limit of $88.0M (-$7.2M). If both are matched, that's an extra ~$6.9M added which puts them at approximately $102.1M (-$14.1M).
