It was a bad pick. A total reach. I think the Sens made the mistake drafting for need, trying to find their "Tom Wilson".
If he turns out to be like Wilson it's a good pick, but I think that's highly unlikely.
It was a bad pick on that day, and remains a bad pick today.

He was a big stretch to be taken top 10. Most draft guides had him mid 2nd round. Only McKenzie had him late 1st and i think that was his highest ranking.

There must be a lot of paranoia amongst teams when it comes to teams picking 2nd round talent in the 1st round. There's a good chance he would have been there for their 39th pick and even at that they possibly could have packaged 39 and 49 to move up into the late 1st round or early 2nd round to get him while retaining the 10th overall pick for a top 10 talent.

So it sounds like the sens saw the flames Hunter Smith pick in the 2nd round and said 'hold my beer'. Cool.

Oddly enough 2014 at the time was not thought to be a great draft. But it seems to have been a decent draft in time. 2021 was a real wild card with how little many guys had played because of shortened Covid Bubble seasons in the CHL. Will be interesting to see how many later guys come out of that draft 10 years after.

Kevin Korchinski may end up being the best player in the deal. There is a lot of constant commentary on this site about the value of high picks, so I think turning 7th, mid 2nd and third into a 1st and 4th is MUCH worse, depending on where that pick ends up but it's got a lot of protection built in for the Wings.

To look at another way: the Habs picked Filip Mesar with the pick they got in the Toffoli deal. I think he's got 3rd line upside at best. The other guys picked around him are similar: Flip Bystedt, Jiri Kulich, Maveric Lamoureux. And then you have Brad Lambert at 30 who has some real upside. But I honestly don't think 5 years from now, or 10 years from now we will be lamenting the loss of those players, like we do other bad Flame trades.

But there's a good chance Ottawa fans will be looking at Korchinski with envy.
Then there is the Suniev factor. I think he was rated mid 2nd round in a stronger draft. Could he have been a late first in the 2022 draft. Even is Mesar is good, what if Suniev is just as good. How much did we lose?

Thatcher Demko two picks after the Flames took Mason MacDonald and Brandon Montour one pick after the Flames select Hunter Smith. Yeeesh
