To reschedule this event and not the others sends a very poor message.
At least 4 football bowl games cancelled outright, including the Holiday Bowl last night which was cancelled on a few hours notice. This thing is affecting more than just hockey. However the international teams and players in hockey (IIHF and also NHL) certainly complicate rule making and decision making for hockey's governing bodies. NHL for example is having a much more difficult time adapting than the NFL due to border issues that other leagues do not need to take into consideration.

I worded my original post poorly. My point was that if the IIHF continued this event despite numerous positive Covid tests it would completely contradict their statement made this week outlining the concern for safety of players/personnel as reasoning for cancelled events in coming months instead of the revenue “men vs women” side of the conversation they were battling and being criticized for.
I guess we’ll see what they say at the presser concerning rescheduling this event versus others.

Because that’s how long ago people would have had to have known if it was going to be played in a bubble.
You knew nothing until the nhl omicron breakout and even then, you didn’t know for sure how it would affect the world juniors until about a week ago when the teams were already in Canada and by then it was too late.
|
Yes, thats all valid. But it was about 2 and a half weeks ago when NHL games were being postponed and I think we all knew it. Its all moot at this point and too bad, we were all looking forward to the wjc.

It’s not hindsight if a great many people anticipated a huge Omicron surge over a month ago.
Omicron was already rampant in Europe in mid-November. At every stage of the pandemic, surges in Europe have been followed by surges in Canada 3-4 weeks later. Every time.
I don’t understand how this is a surprise to so many Canadians. It’s maybe understandable in the general public, whose internet seems to stop at the mid-Atlantic. But it’s inexcusable for authorities and planners. They have a window into Covid future just by checking into what’s happening in Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. What they do with that information is a matter of judgement and balancing tradeoffs. But nobody in Canada who has been paying the least attention to Covid globally should have been surprised by Omicron.

I read somewhere it was five officials, can’t play if there’s no officials

Plus even if someone is positive with no symptoms, whoever they spread it to might not be so lucky.

There was another post in the thread saying to stop testing asymptomatic individuals, but this is why having the testing protocols in place is important.

A 5th wave is not the same as Omicron.
No one knew omicron was going to spread this quickly until it was too late.
