Zucker had a big season last year but other than that, his stats don't look that good. He's on pace for 41 points this season. For another 4 years at $5.5 million per? No thanks.

It's one thing to come out a week before the deadline and say you're happy with the roster and you're going with what brought you to the dance. The message isn't as strong when you acknowledge you were close to a major trade and were reportedly very close on other big pieces.

I am fine with it. This team isn't there yet (especially with the Bolts). We got a few years to go
Hopefully Neal can fill that void...hopefully

Im still disappointed they didnt add some size...Simmonds or Hayes would have been perfect.
But this is year 1 of a window that will be open a while and more than anything the experience they get this playoffs will be worth so much more than any one player and will also allow BT to asees what the holes are on the club and still have assets to deal with them in the summer.

Flames have the youngest core of any of the Western contenders. Yet they also lead the conference standings. All the others leveraged their future to try to keep up. Flames didn't leverage their future. Many fans are mad.

Massive fail today. The Flames chances decreased today with the 4 teams below them all getting better and significantly better IMO.
I'm all for not trading for any of the big guns, where you needed to included the young dmen, but to not pony up and land a guy like Nyquist makes no sense to me.

Every year you see teams sell the farm for a big TDL addition and 95 percent of them wind up being the equivalent of flushing your assets down the toilet. We have great team chemistry here and I have zero issue with BT showing a vote of confidence in the team as is. 1st overall in the west and 2nd overall NHL. While guys like Neal etc have underperformed. We have a lot more to give. Let the teams around us panic in the arms race. All we have to do is hold the course.

I want to remind you all that these teams are currently behind Calgary in points and these moves were made to be better than Calgary.
We are the team to beat. So suck it Pacific, you traded your futures to beat Calgary this year, but what about next year or the year after that.
|
Those teams all have better line-ups then Calgary now. (Vegas I'd argue on even footing now) (SJ arguably already did before the Nyquist add).
I'd take any of those team over the Flames in a 7 game series now.

Sign Chucky (and get a goalie) and we have a window to win that is wide open for at least 3 more seasons when Gaudreau's contract expires.Assuming they can extend Johnny the window is open even longer.
Not upset Tre didn't sell the farm this season.
SJ, Vegas, Toronto, Tampa, Winnipeg are all royally screwed starting next season. All those teams are going to look very different next year.
Flames can worry about selling the farm slowly over the next 2-3 seasons.
Nashville looks like they're in a good spot-ish moving forward but those other big Western team are in a world of hurt cap wise.

If that was the deal then it's even more disappointing.

Giving up a 25-31st pick to upgrade Frolik? I probably would do that, the tipping point being that Zucker is signed beyond this season. More valuable than a rental.

I am okay with the Flames not adding at the deadline, but our hopes of a deep playoff run took a pretty big hit today. There are a lot of teams that seem to be going all in this year (BOS/CBJ/NSH/VGS/SJ/WYG)

I don't think the Flames needed to go all in on a Stone or a Hayes today, so I'm not too fussed about missing out there.
I'm a bit concerned about the RW depth though. One more 2nd/3rd line RW with some grit and ability would have gone a long way if the injury bug hits and if there is a long run. Zuccarello (though he got hurt right away), Nyquist, Simmonds and Granlund were all fairly reasonable rentals, so it's a bit disappointing that nothing got done. Hopefully we don't regret it.
Defense is in great shape this time at least.

I wonder if they wanted some salary retained maybe and just ran out of time to hammer out the details. This reeks of something to keep an eye on in the off-season, Treliving isn't the sort to all of a sudden be interested in someone. If he really likes the player, they'll re-visit this

Neither of the top 2 teams in the conferences added anything. Interesting.
Most of the teams that added today will curse these deals come may, June. But the west is much better for sure. Flames are in tough, but not sure if a big deal would have changed that. Hoping for Neal to step up in the playoffs.

Nyquist has a no-trade clause on his contract, and by all counts very much wanted to go to SJ. The Flames's "massive fail" here is not being located in California.
