From most accounts Monahan played pretty physical in junior too.
Think that part of his game just hasn't translated since he isn't physically mature enough to be running at NHL d-men yet and is smart enough to know it.
Well Monahan's was the OHL mandatory 10 for a headshot, no matter the circumstances. Bennett cross checked a guy in the face there's a difference there.
There isn't a mandatory 10 game suspension in the OHL for headshots.

hmm I thought there was, I know they did a major crackdown on it. Regardless, this was his suspension hit. A crosscheck to the face is more outright vicious in intent in my books, regardless of outcome.
I think Buffalo is a sure thing for offence. They likely take Reinhart 1st overall.
After that the order is gonna get messy.
Oilers are playing better so I hope they screw themselves out of Ekblad. So the Panthers likely get the 2nd position, they need Ekblad and are already deep with young centers.
The Islanders will likely pick 3rd, Bennett a possibility but I think they'll either trade down or reach for a dman.
1. Sabres - Sam Reinhart
2. Panthers - Aaron Ekblad
3. Islanders - Leon Draisaitl
4. Flames - Sam Bennett
5. Oilers - Nick Ritchie
Having a look at the remaining schedules, I feel like the standings aren't likely to change at the bottom here, Islanders have a reasonable schedule and should be able to win more than the Flames. It will be pretty hard for either Florida or the Oilers to take over the Flames though and it really might just come down to the head-to-head games against those opponents.
I think we pick 4th and Reinhart, Ekblad and Bennett will be gone which leaves us with Draisaitl or Dal Colle (or someone else?). I think following that logic Draisatl will be a Flame...

Wow, this is like last year all over again. I know it sucks to be a bottom feeder team, but I guess I get a different sort of enjoyment out of it with all the scoreboard watching. Instead constantly scoreboard watching and hoping certain teams lose so they fall out of the playoff race, I'm now hoping for certain teams to win in order to leap ahead of the Flames. Weird times.

Don't see the Oilers catching us. Florida will pass us I think, and NYI will distance themselves.

I saw Virtanen last night against the lowly hurricanes, and was not overly impressed (not unimpressed though). He was a non factor for the first half of the game, but he didn't seem to be getting much ice time. He did have a goal (might have been the winning goal) that was a result of driving hard to the net and deflecting a nice hard pass into the net. His skating was the most noticeable thing I saw...good speed and really good edgework, especially on the forecheck.
I'm not sure if he's a great pick for where we'll (probably) be picking, but I wouldn't be unhappy to have him in our system.

Out of curiosity, I recall Feaster made a big deal out of whoever they drafted needed to be NHL ready straight out of the gates. On the otherside of it, I have come to believe that Burke is a big believer in working your way up and probably wouldn't have much problem sending someone back to junior.
Out of all these guys, who is likely to stay up (or is it all of them)?
Yeah Oilers have a tough remaining schedule and are the Kings of tanking, if Buffalo wasn't 8 points behind already they might have had a shot at catching them.
Florida is the best chance to catch us. Luongo makes them better, and they have the easiest remaining schedule.
Islanders are another possibility. They are a better roster then they had shown earlier this season and the players will have a chip on their shoulders to prove that they are not just Tavares, might get a little bit of the Ewing Theory working with him out.
I've only seen Reinhart and Ekblad play but from what I've researched I would say if we can't draft either of those two or Bennett maybe we should trade the pick for an asset and a lower pick and draft Fleury..

I'd imagine Ekblad is the most NHL ready considering he was decent at the WJC and is the most physically developed of the top prospects. Arguably the rest should go back. But crappy teams like BUF, NYI, EDM, and FLA may keep them up (and arguably it will be a mistake.)

Why is that? Fleury doesn't seem to have a higher upside than some of the other forwards available like Dal Colle, Draisaitl, etc.
Yeah, trading down for positional need is a mistake that would take us back into Sutter territory. Take the best guy we can and sort out overloaded positions later.
Buffalo could have 2 picks in the top 5. They could take Ekblad at 1 and a forward with their second pick from Islanders. That's disturbing.
Actually, more disturbing is that the Islanders are going to likely keep that pick and give up next years. And since the Sabres are setting themselves up for Epic Tank next season, they might have two top 5's in a better draft.
