The truth was that the flames put themselves into "win now" mode when they signed a 29-yo and a 31-yo to those high cost deals that will age poorly.
It didn't work out and now they have to decide whether it was the team construction or just bad luck. If it's team construction, tear it down. If you think it's bad luck, then you remain in win-now mode.
If they sell Lindholm or Backlund, they might as well sell Mangiapane, Huby and Kadri as well. What's the point of having aging stars if you're not in "win now" mode?
So they have two choices. They can either stick with it or they can cut bait and rebuild. That's a really hard decision and they should be struggling with it.
The last thing I want to see the flames do is a half-measure. Beyond trading Tanev and non-core players like Lewis and Lucic, either do nothing or tear it down.

I would move Backs if a deal came up. His value isn't going to be any higher than it is right now. Well, possibly next year at the expiration of his contract... but who knows if he maintains the type of form he's currently in. Would rather deal him (if possible) when we KNOW his value is high.

While walking some assets to UFA and trading others for pennies on the dollar.

I think absolute best case scenario for us is to have Treliving in the GM seat longterm and for him and Sutter to be pulling in the same direction.
Treliving is a competent general manager, and that's more than what we can hope for as fans of this organization. My biggest hope is that the direction that Treliving and Sutter both pull in is towards a rebuild. I'd feel confident in having Treliving/Sutter leading that direction...but yikes, it just doesn't seem like a decision ownership would make here. They seem driven to run their organization like the 2002 New York Rangers.

Yup. Look at Treliving’s record. He has done lots of work and the team is still mediocre at best
I’d take a chance with a fresh mind. If he is worse, we get better picks. It’s better than 9th place or losing 1st rounds

Although I think it shouldn't matter, I think the Flames are errantly viewing their commitments to Huberdeau and Kadri and saying that they have no choice but to try and win now, despite these two players being sunk costs.

Confidence in what? I only spoke to the fact that Treliving is just another mediocre guy. He's not a guy I fear losing.

It could always be lower next year.

I dont think Jiri is saying differently, but I fear who he could be replaced by.
This organization bats like 10% to even land an average GM.

a risk for sure but probably one I'd be willing to take given his underlying numbers

I actually agree with the flames. If they're not going to win-now, then these two players should be the first two traded. These two players have done nothing for the franchise and I don't think the franchise needs to throw itself into 8-years of mediocrity just to honor their contracts. The franchise owes them nothing.

That's all well and good but those contracts aren't being moved, Huberdeau's hasn't even started yet. They're staying, and will be apart of any rebuild retool etc etc
