Tkachuk is definitely much more likely to do something worth booing than Gaudreau.

He is trading a 24 year old power forward who just had a 100 point season. Despite his Lucic like skating, I am sure a reasonable expectation would be for this to be a huge package with at least 3 grade A assets minimum. The Seth Jones package of a former 1st rounder with NHL experience and two other first round picks or 1st round level talent should be the expectation.

I'm not mad at Chucky, honestly. At least he's giving them a heads up early and a list of teams to work with ... I don't know if he was open to re-sign here before Gaudreau left, but I'm sure John's decision didn't help in that regard, to put it mildly. Either way, he's handling all of this in a way more mature and open way than Gaudreau, so it's not close for me between those two.

and in a way, I think he's even doing us a favor. Once Gaudreau left, retooling/building/whatever made a lot of sense and even though I loved Chucky with the Flames, I have my reservations about him being THE guy for more than 10m a year. We're selling high on him after the season he's had.

You may not recognize it right away. That deal four years ago had a very long and robust argument for weeks about Calgary getting fleeced.

Don't think the Calgary lost the deal crew simmered down until a few nuggets leaked out or changed.

- Fox wasn't going to sign here
- great RFA signings
- Lindholm pops

Well Ferland getting a career ending injury helped out as well.

Hopefully this works out as well for the Flames as that did for Seattle.

What’s a little scary in this situation is the lack of teams lining up for Johnny as a UFA. Tkachuk is a different skill set player and not free. So was the lack of interest just Johnny or are teams not too keen on adding money to their books as a whole? I think MT’s unique skill set intrigues a lot of teams that they get a bidding war. Hopefully a lot of those aren’t contenders.

Right or wrong I suspect GMs around the league would take Tkachuk 10 times out of 10 vs. Gaudreau

the picks they got for Fox turned into Noel Gunler and Jamieson Rees, so I guess that's ... something?! But yeah, unbelievable that they have almost nothing to show for while we got a top line center and a top pairing defenseman out of it.

Would be funny if the flames traded Tkachuk to the Flyers. I wonder how upset Gaudreau would be if the flyers were willing to trade for Tkachuk rather than spend on him.

Chucky would be a great Flyer to be honest.

Meh. They have Seth Jarvis for a Patty Marleau buyout. I would not worry too much about the Canes, they are a well run organization.

If it is St Louis or bust then I am guessing it will be Neighbors + Bolduc + a cap dump

Have you seen any respectable people tweet about a rumoured return? Or is this based on the crazy, unrealistic CP rumours?

That's correct, but I always loved it as I saw trading 3 years of contract for 12 years. Plus I pretty much knew Fox was not signing here.

Flat cap. A lot of teams simply can’t bring on a $9+ mil contract.

Not really ... that crew wouldn't give Treliving any credit for an injury after the fact (as they shouldn't)

I'm not saying it's what I'd want, but putting myself in NJD's shoes I'm not sure why I'm adding a ton beyond Bratt for the privilege of overpaying a fantastic winger with question marks.

Many of us are uncertain whether Tkachuk is a cornerstone player. Tkachuk has a higher floor than Bratt with more certainty/track-record. Is that worth paying $10M and another 3 great assets?

Or do you keep the assets and stick with Bratt for 5-7M...worst case you can probably still get a good return later. If I'm building a contender I want that top winger to be my 4th or 5th most important player (after my 1-2C, 1D, 1G). I'm not sure Bratt is that guy, but I'd rather keep him and use those assets/cap space on a top pair LHD with a bit of term like Ekholm* or Chycrun or Provorov...maybe even Vince Dunn.

*I doubt Ekholm is available, but he seems somewhat expendable now with McDo; he signed an extension in October that is just kicking in now - not even certain he's eligible to be traded until Jan. 1. Severson+ for Ekholm could be nifty for both sides.

Would you do Mangi+1st+Coronato+Zary for the privilege of paying Laine? Definite upgrade on Mangi with a longer track record, but he's also more expensive with significant question marks. At least for NJD, the optimistic proposals here wouldn't empty their cupboards like that.

But it is more like Mangiapane + Coronato + a 1st for Tkachuk which I would do in a heart beat if the Flames felt their window was opening.
