Lots of people not happy about the closed roof on the stadium - you're forgetting that there are residential areas around the site that would need a roof for this stadium to not be restricted by sound related bylaws.
Last thing we want is the no-concerts allowed McMahon Stadium.
That and taking freezing weather out of the equation for a football game? Bring it.

Its not specifically about a hockey arena, football stadium or field house, its about the bigger picture of Calgary. You need ALL of these things. The 1% art thing is another example of this, so is the new public library, National music center, winsport, ect...
Imagine an in demand profession that has several equally attractive offers on the table to bring their talents to organizations in various "world class" cities (ie New York, Paris, London, ect..) If they havent heard of Calgary or what it offers they are most likely going to skip out on Calgary and go with one of the more established cities. This is about putting Calgary on the top of lists for people to come here.

That stadium does a good job with allowing a lot of natural light in, which helps out, and I guess the rough design for ours is more of the same. I'll still miss the fresh air though.
With the loss of any kind of baseball and the stamps moving inside we will now have a completely sterilized sports experience. The only decent outdoor venue will be 40km south in Okotoks. Also the 2-3 games of bad weather will go down to 1 if the CFL ever decides to move the start date of the season up.

so if the city opposes this what is the alternative?
Flames leave town? Saddledome with no tenant, Stamps fold
Two old ass stadiums with nobody to operate them

In regards to the Stamps and weather, I think it's more about the certainty of no bad weather, rather than the bad weather itself. If people can commit to buying tickets early and not worry about what the weather is, that will result in more ticket sales overall.

So, assuming they can actually pull it off, wouldn't the proposed design provide the feel of an outdoor facility with the benefits of a roof? This isn't like the old-school BC place or huge indoor stadiums. Am I missing something?

I would guarantee better tickets sales in a new football stadium...for various reasons including the weather

A new stadium needs a roof. That's how we get more butts in the seats for events, especially in weather that is as unpredictable as Calgary's.
I know lots of people who don't attend Stamps games because it can be just too darn cold, windy, rainy or snowy.

The only thing the roof will rob us of will be outdoor NHL games.

Many American cities with 1 million people get skipped as well. Bands play San Francisco and not San Jose (or Sacramento or Oakland) often. Bands choose to have a certain amount of shows per tour. They aren't suddenly adding more shows because a city built a new arena.
As it is bands often go Vancouver, Edmonton/Calgary and then Winnipeg for a Western Canadian swing. It's not suddenly becoming Vancouver and Edmonton and Calgary and Winnipeg. The roof is not a cure all to getting more concerts here. Will it mean a few more shows skip Edmonton for Calgary? Yes, but shows will still skip Calgary for Edmonton.
That's my point, if people think that's going to stop with a new arena, they are in for some heartbreak. Big acts will still skip Calgary.

Winnipeg and Regina got theirs right.

They also got facilities that are useless 355 days of the year.

Didn't see the presentation but that's what I'm hoping. A modern stadium that allows for natural light and conditions for a real grass playing surface -- without the headaches of an open air stadium. Not sure if that is a possibility.
