I personally hate the concept of a dome for the football, the robbing of one nice summer game isn't worth any amount of climate controlled games later in the year IMO.
I watched a football game in Glendale a couple years ago and the fact it was inside didn't even register while I watched. It was a complete non-issue.

From a financial point of view it makes walk-up sales way more predictable, I imagine.

When no one else bids is there really an option of grass vs turf?

If we ever want to un-hinge Calgary's dependence on the Oil & Gas industry and expand into other markets, we need the worlds most talented people. Why would these indemand people come to a city that doesn't offer the same level of living as the cities we will be competing with.

It goes deeper than just financial justifications, think longer term.
Because the world's most talented people could give less of a F*** about a new hockey rink and fieldhouse when deciding where to live...

If we had an MLB team that played 81 home games a year then yes, a retractable roof would be worth it. For the Stamps to maybe play 12 games at home each year (incl playoffs, exhibition) is not worth it.

So I may have missed the detail... but that cost breakdown:

$200M from Flames
$200M from city
$240M Comm revitalization levy
$250M ticket tax

... Is that finalized & approved? Or their proposal to the city? (Has the city agreed to pay that yet or not)

If the non-scientific poll King conducted is accurate, the no-roof fans are totally outnumbered by the roof fans. I'm willing to bet for every person claiming they won't go to an enclosed CFL game, there's 5 that would take their spot. I actively refuse almost every Stamps ticket I'm offered based purely on weather uncertainty.

I saw the show in Calgary and Edmonton and while not a big deal they got the full show up there where as Calgary was scaled back a bit.
I'm pretty sure Metallica skipped Calgary the last time they were here cause they had their massive stage for their concert/horror movie (I believe this cause I went and saw them in Edmonton). You are thinking of the time before that.

then we have successfully diversified our economy and eliminated our dependence on oil and gas by having 50,000 athletes move to this city!

Or the stampede board has a golden opportunity to repurpose the Saddledome into a kick ass convention center, conveniently located next to the too small Round Up center.

Put two together and - presto - convention center problem solved.

yes, I saw that show too...I meant the last time they were in both cities (Death Magnetic Tour)

the most recent Edmonton concert wasn't a tour at all they filmed the movie in Vancouver and had a "dry run" in Edmonton the night before

that being said if Calgary was up to the task they may have thrown in another show

I believe friendlies can be played on artificial turf.

For something like a World Cup, they put grass in domes in 1994. It would all come down to how the facility itself is planned, I would think.

The speculation of trying for MLS in 10-15 years is interesting though. I would imagine we would have to be in natural grass for that. Suggests that even in a dome, natural light would be a priority for this facility.

It would be proposed. Judging by the council's comments in the past, it will not go over well. The team wants to release the information so the citizens get pumped and force the city's hand.

In my experience, indoor football = bad spectator experience. Every. Single. Time.
I understand the rationale, roof required for year round multi-purpose use, but the reality is, indoor-only (fixed-roof) football is nearing extinction. Because once they have experienced it, customers generally dislike it.
Winnipeg and Regina got theirs right.
