1 of 3 possible reasons in my mind
1. The City doesn't have the budget or will to be on time with snow removal and you should expect this all winter.
2. The timing of this snow (Mid-October) isn't condusive to having all the resources necessary for snow removal, whether that be enough sand, salt, equipment ready, or people ready.
or
3. For some assinine reason (Druh Farrell/Brian Pincott Style Environmentalism) the city doesn't believe in road salt anymore. In my mind if the roads had be ploughed and salted accordingly yesterday the more recent accumulation wouldn't be that bad. It's only -4 out, a Liberal helping of salt would save lives and improve commute times on our roads. Clearly this was not done.

In this ultra conservative city, the thought process seems to be 'save the money, let mother nature plow us out with chinooks'
It costs us lives and thousands of work hours every winter. Good savings.

drove past one car on Country Hills Blvd, saw the semi northbound and a number of cabs on the guard rail around 16th, some dumbass in an IROC just after Memorial and then about 9 different cars just after 17th/Blackfoot. Glad I left early.

Calgary is not a large city. Do the comparison yourself - use Google Maps.
Really, we have incompetent snow removal leadership. I've been driving in this city for twenty years now, and it's pretty always been this way.

660 said this morning that police responded to over 400 accidents yesterday.
The roads seem to be worse this morning (with the accumulation). Take 'er easy out there!

I should have saved a screen snapshot from yesterday, but Google Traffic is looking a lot worse today than it did yesterday at this time:

Took an extra 5 mins to get to work this morning, but the roads seem worse today. What upsets me the most is that I needlessly shoveled last night.

Drove down Bow Trail, Crowchild and 16th Avenue this morning. Not one was shoveled. And this was right before rush hour.
Three major arteries full of snow, and slippery as sin because of it. Yup, I'm not dissapointed or anything.

Hm, we're flying out to Toronto today. I had been planning to try to get to the airport at about 4:15-4:30 or so. This should be interesting.

More snow today than yesterday, but it's also warmer outside, and the snow is stickier. Really, it shouldn't be a problem driving out there, but for some reason it's backed up more today than yesterday.
Yesterday was day 1 for the season that winter tires would have helped, but I don't think I can say the same thing for today - they wouldn't have made any difference today.

Or 4... we live in a winter city and winter has arrived early.
On a day like this, it seems that everyone would be willing to spend millions on the best snow removal fleet on the planet. But when it sits idle for three weeks during a chinook, I can already hear the whining about reckless spending by city hall.
I don't think that Calgary is unique that when a winter storm hits, roads get bad.

A 20 minute drive took 75.

Yeah I was talking with my brother-in-law who gave me a ride this morning as my truck is in getting winter tires. He said he would hate to live in these burbs that are depending on traffic flowing on Deerfoot. At least in both our neighborhoods there are options to at least get out of your own community. We went on some obscure trail today. Looped through a couple of communities, then onto Barlow, under Deerfoot on using Ogden road then more turning here and there and popping out onto Blackfoot. And on from there to work. It was at least always moving!!!!!
