Sure. Expected. Likely. Good chances. Never guaranteed though.

At the beginning of the season they were included among the teams many thought would come out of the West. The Blues had an awful start, and an inexplicably bad first half, but once they got rolling I recall that most people took them pretty seriously—in the second half St Louis looked like the team they were supposed to be from the beginning. It wasn't like it was the Oilers or the Coyotes sneaking in on the last day of the year.

Which is different from "almost guaranteed."

Good but not great. Flyers were a half chance away or a fluke away from tying it up at 2, even though the Flames generally looked in control all night. A lot of the kudos being handed out here may not have been so forthcoming to the team or to individuals if the Flyers bounced one of those in, without them or the Flames playing any better or worse. Still a fair bit of work to do as a team and as individuals to get that swagger back of last year.

Baby steps though, build some confidence with a win and get players back on track.

Was nice to see the Flames score first and hold onto the lead for the entire game, been overdue for a game like that this season.

Also, solid game from the entire D lineup (especially the young guns) but haven't seen anyone mention Brodie yet, I thought he played great tonight

Not sure what this comment has to do with easy games in the NHL. There definitely are relatively easy games and the original comment by scorpion was playoff teams not eventual champions. It's not an impossible task to look at your upcoming schedule and see what the tougher and easier match ups are.

Also, as textcritic mentioned many thought that St Louis was a contender before the season started so if you want to cherry pick this example for whatever you are trying to argue here, it's not the greatest. Expectations change when you play games and they can swing both ways. St Louis started as a contender, was written off and then became a top contender going into the playoffs because they were one of the hottest teams.

Not true. Odds at the start of 18-19 season.

St. Louis Blues: 40/1
Montreal Canadiens: 50/1
Carolina Hurricanes: 60/1
New York Islanders: 60/1
Buffalo Sabres: 66/1
New York Rangers: 70/1
Detroit Red Wings: 75/1
Arizona Coyotes: 80/1
Vancouver Canucks: 80/1
Ottawa Senators: 100/1

These tidy defensive efforts will pay off for CGY. Once the habits are sound (tracking back hard by forwards allows the d to keep tight gaps etc) CGY should force turnovers which can feed the transition.

The discipline and hard work on defensive side will give them chances to utilize the creativity and hockey iq I see up and down the line up. I can just see the confidence grow from these simple plays and that translate to making plays offensively.

They have so many more gears in their game but it needs to be built up with he good habits, then watch out - this team is going to take off like a rocket. Offense and plays through the roof.

What's your source? According the bleacher report they had the 10th best odds. How many other teams are tied at 40-1?

What did everyone think of the delayed penalty call on Hanifin? I just rewatched it, and my own feelings from the have been bolstered; it sure looks like he ran into a player with the puck, who was spun around and fell. I thought it was a pretty weak call.

For me it was a terrible call, and the players sort of let up waiting for the whistle to blow.

Horrible call or not, the players need to play until the whistle. Get possession, get a whistle, and kill the penalty. Don't stop skating. Hope they learned a lesson tonight.

I was at the game and didn't have much for replays to properly assess every one, but I thought that every single call on both sides tonight were weak.

I enjoy Gaskal's ATL when Flames beat Flyers the most. You read this forum when Flames are down and it's all doom and gloom, no jokes. Over there - not as much.

Flames 3 Flyers 1

- Flames get some depth scoring
- David Rittich bounces back with win
- Still taking too many penalties, especially early
