Now that I've said all that the Flames probably will claim him. At which point I'll flip flop and say what an outstanding move it is.

It doesn't have to be outstanding to be smart. I think it would behoove Flames management to put in a claim when

a) He fits the age structure and needs of the team,
b) There is a surplus of cap space and contract spots, and
c) There is no risk here. None.

Worst case scenario he's no better than Diaz or Brookbank. Best case scenario the Flames add a young PMD which is far and away the biggest weak spot across the entire organization.

But it's entirely possible the Flames have no interest in him and he clears like you said. They may have a book on him that we as fans don't. But from where I sit it's looking like a good opportunity to pounce.

This is exactly the type of thing a rebuilding team in our situation should do. Elliott seems to be about as good offensively as Diaz. Diaz looked somewhat bad defensively, and I'm sure Elliott is also not particularly good defensively. The difference is that there's potential for change in Elliott where Diaz is basically a finished product.

If Elliott blows, ride out the contract and get someone else in there. It's the same type of move that we did with Colborne and Russell last and in each case they have proven to be decent players for us thus far.

Apparently the Avs have tried Elliott on the wing. I think when you start doing that with defencemen - especially when you are known as a team with good forward depth but poor defensive depth - it makes you think. Avs' fans seem very unconcerned about losing him. Roy seems very unconcerned with losing him. Sometimes prospects - regardless of how much potential they have shown - just don't develop and can't seem to translate to the next level.

I am actually fine with Calgary passing on him.

It's weird though isn't it? There's always a half-dozen players that hit the waiver wire every year that I want the Flames to claim, but I swear won't make it to their spot. Then not only do they make it to that spot, but then no one claims them and they make it through waivers (sometimes multiple times for the same player).

Obviously managers, scouts, and the like know more than we do, but it's just so hard to fathom that there are 180+ dmen in the league that teams would prefer to hold onto rather than players like Stefan Elliot.

Not many players get picked up at this time of year. I would not be surprised if some are not picked up and then later traded for when injuries start piling up.

Waivers are a weird thing. The obligations towards a player claimed off waivers appear to be bordering on punitive, based on my admittedly limited understanding.

I suspect but am too lazy to verify that more players waived are shortly thereafter traded for than outright claimed.

Why would we or anyone want to give a guaranteed spot to a guy who (assuming all camps run on similar schedules) was not even close to getting a spot on another team?

Besides, would be a pretty definitive middle finger to guys fighting for that spot in the camp right now. "Sorry guys, there was this reject from another team, better luck next time..."

Poirier's contract may slide, but according to capgeek's definition of the reserve list, he still counts toward the 50 contract limit.

Quote:
According to the 2013 NHL-NHLPA collective bargaining agreement, the total number of players signed to an SPC for one club can not be more than 50 or less than than 27 (24 skaters and three goaltenders). The lone exemptions to the rule are players aged 18 and 19 who have been returned to junior and who have not played in 11 NHL games in one season. Although these players generally have slide-eligible contracts, it is not always the case. Candidates for this exemption are highlighted in yellow.

We didn't claim Bodie in case anyone was worried:

David Alter@dalter37s38 seconds ago

Troy Bodie has cleared waivers and will report to the #Marlies No real surprise there.

To be fair they pretty much did it with Colborne last year. Traded for a guy who wasn't going to make his team and then gave him a permanent spot on the roster the entire year.

I have nothing against Butler as a person, I wish him all the best and hope he can find his NHL game again. But a lot of posters should be eating crow now. There were serious suggestions that the league may not accept the contract (edit: maybe that was Stempniak) and that he could have got more than his 1.7M contract if he was willing to sign outside of St. Louis. It should be abundantly obvious now that there wasn't that demand for him and it has nothing to do with being a Butler-hater.

I don't hold Patrick Roy's talent assessment in high esteem ever since the Avs overpaid for Reto Berra. He has inherited a talented team and is likely a good coach but that's about it. I would listen to the Flames' scouts about Elliott and Samuelsson and act accordingly. Diaz has been OK, if either of those two young d-men is better then take them.

Not really defending Butler. But I think St Louis got a good deal, and Butler probably could have gotten more or at least an NHL spot elsewhere.

Waivers Claims in September should be considered a big deal. At a time most teams are trying to get 10 -20 guys off their roster adding a new guy who you are not allowed to get rid of is a hard thing to do, and they have to really like the guy to claim him.

Why claim Butler when any team could still sign Diaz and at least have the opportunity to send him down in the first month, in the Long Run is there really much difference between the two? Especially when you are talking about a 7/8 for most teams.

Granted. But it's pretty rare (plus of course slightly different since it was was a trade).

True. It's much easier to get players through waivers now than it is during the season. Most teams are relatively healthy and like you said, are having enough trouble paring down their rosters without adding one more depth player. Butler is probably good enough to be a bottom pairing on a lot of teams, but most teams are saturated with bottom pairing players or fringe players that they have more time invested in and would rather give a shot to.
