EDIT: I forgot one more, AntiChrist. EFF, that, movie.
Seen a lot of those.

Memory is unresponsive right now. But off the dome I'd say Mother!, Men and Mandy would crack the top 50.

Beau is Afraid has to be in the ball park as well.

All great picks! My wife did not enjoy Beau is Afraid as much as I did. Too much existential dread.

I'd nominate Poor Things and Society for the list too.

Noticed Zemeckis' Here is on Prime.

Iis an ambitious exploration of time, memory, and human connection. I guessed by the way the movie was presented at times using frames within frames that it was based on a comic or graphic novel, and indeed confirmed afterwards it is. The movie unfolds entirely within a single space, with a 'camera' pointing in the same room, chronicling its occupants across centuries.

Strong performances anchor the narrative, which plays like a stage production, using time shifts instead of location changes. It's visually...interesting, and heavily employs digital de-aging with mixed results. Its quiet, observational style started to test my patience, and in the end I don’t know if the movie fully worked for me, but I can appreciate its attempt at something new.

Coming to mind in this theme (movies that are psychologically damaging):

Romper Stomper
The Piano Teacher
Irreversible
Audition
Possessor
Annihilation
Jacob's Ladder

Does Ari Aster's "The Strange Thing About The Johnsons" count (it's a 28m short)

Also Happiness was mentioned above but really, any Todd Solondz movie applies (personally I find Storytelling the hardest to watch)

Hereditary is another that comes to mind for me for effed up movies. And pretty much any of Yorgos Lanthimos movies - i saw Poor Things mentioned which is a good one.

Watched Alien: Romulus last night. It was okay, good I’d say. The ending though…………. Sigh…..

Coulda been better if the ending was better.

Oh.....Happiness.....that was filed in the "only need to watch once" pile along with Requiem , Irreversible and Session 9. That was a great add on to effed up movie list .

I finally re-watched Jacob’s Ladder since my initial viewing in the theatre ####ed my brain right up. It wasn’t as bad this time because I understood the reasons for his delusions more than I did the first time.

A Serbian Film is considered the most disturbing movie ever. I’ve never seen it though and probably won’t. Pink Flamingos is up there, if only for one scene.

At the Globe on Thursday, Calgary Cinematique is coincidentally showing Bonnie and Clyde featuring the recently deceased Gene Hackman

Watched La Vie Boheme by Aki Kaurismäki, one of my favorite directors but I had missed that one. Quite funny, really enjoyable in that trademark Kaurismäki way.

Also watched Don't Move, a Netflix horror/thriller movie, very simple concept, works much better than you'd expect, really solid writing, good pacing, good twists, strong recommendation for fans of the genre.

Flow beating out Wild Robot was a pretty big upset.

I watched a great war time film the 49th Parallel. During the early days of WW2 a German boat is sunk in the Hudson Bay and a small group of German soldiers trying to avoid capture in hostile Canada try to sneak into the then still neutral USA. The film takes place all across Canada including a crucial scene in Banff national park and Banff Springs Hotel (I think). The film also has Laurence Olivier playing a French Canadian fur trader with the thickest French Canadian accent ever. It's a fantastic film, and was made by Powell and Pressburger to try convince America to enter the war. If you want to see a film with Canadians fighting nazis across Canada this is the film to see.

A Real Pain is indeed great. Culkin definitely deserved the Oscar.

Disappointed that Timothee Chamblee didn't get an Oscar for best actor and Nosferatu not getting one for best cinematography.

The Oscars did the most Oscars thing ever. Give Best Actor to a middle-aged dude, and Best Actress to the ingenue

Watched Heavier Trip, the sequel to the already cult classic Heavy Trip, and was very satisfied. It's obviously not as endearing as the first one, being a bigger production with actual expectations on it, but the absolute love of the genre is still pouring out of the screen every moment, and I still laughed out loud plenty of times.

Any metalheads out there should absolutely check this one out (and lf course Heavy Trip if you've missed out on that one). For others, it's a very solid rock comedy, keep your expectations reasonable and you're likely to have a good time.

It was my favorite film of the year. A great balance between drama and comedy, between sombre and lighthearted. Beyond Culkin's performance, which is astounding, the film is full of wonderful moments that are hard to pull off because of the delicate balance Eisenberg was going for.

That being said, I've yet to see Anora or The Brutalist, so my list may still change...

I watched a slew of pretty good movies over the weekend:

Dallas Buyers Club - 8/10. I knew McConaughey had a great performance going into this movie but was blown away by Jared Leto. I thought the story was good but the actors performances really carried the movie.

Reservoir Dogs - 9/10. This was the only Tarantino flick I hadn't watched, I think it may be my new favorite.

Stranger than Fiction - 7/10. I threw this movie on not expecting much. I was surprised by Ferrell's acting and the overall narrative came together better than expected.

Her - 8/10. Amazon Prime had this listed under 'action' which I thought was funny for a movie that's 90% just a guy talking to his phone. I loved the movie, I thought it gave a really clear perspective on relationships and the human condition and is even more relevant 10+ years after its release.

A Real Pain - 7/10. I enjoyed this film overall and can respect Culkin's performance. I wanted to enjoy this film a lot more than I did, maybe it was a bit too subtle for my taste.
