I'm a person of English as second language, I just don't know how to pronounce it. Why do you have to spin it like I'm making fun of his name?

Love the deal even more now that details confirmed (if source reliable)!
Find me some trades in the past where a 34 year old goalie was traded for a 1st and a servicable 4-5 D man who is only age 23.
A mid to late 1st round pick has been a max return for starters in net who are generally much younger than Markstrom.

In each of the previous five cases in the cap era where a 30+ goalie was traded for a 1st, there were always additional pieces going along with that 1st. Sometimes there were additional pieces moved along with the goalie.

- Markstrom from CGY to NJ for 1st, Bahl
- Kuemper from AZ to COL for 1st, 3rd, Timmins
- Miller and Ott from BUF to STL for 1st, 3rd, Halak, Stewart, Carrier
- Toskala and Bell from SJ to TOR for 1st, 2nd, 4th
- Vokoun from NSH to FLA for 1st, 2nd, 2nd
- Roloson from MIN to EDM for 1st, 3rd

A 1st is definitely not the maximum payment. That said, this was a good return and pretty close to the high end of the historical market.

I listen to his show and Steinberg was never suggesting that a first wasn’t the discussion. Even he was talking about adding our 28th to get their 10th as part of his hypothetical. I’ve noted previously I’m not into his ‘surprise’ at the Flames getting a first of some kind… that’s all he was talking about for weeks.
Anyways, we got the first and a big body. I’m happy.

I suspected that this off-season in order to ensure Wolf gets a fair shake, they'd have to have some big d brought in to clear the front of the net so Wolf can see. I suspect Bahl and perhaps others may be in the cards. I'm not sure anyone is sold on Wolf's size in the NHL, but his reaction time and positioning are excellent. How he'll be able to see around NHL size forwards is a question still.

Has he been playing against hobbits in the AHL?

It's a dialect thing. Linguists call it the ‘cot/caught’ merger.
If you pronounce ‘cot’ the same as ‘caught’ (as most Canadians do), then ‘Bahl’ will be the same as ‘ball’.
If you pronounce those words differently (‘caht’ vs. ‘cawt’), then ‘Bahl’ will likely have the same vowel sound as ‘cot’, where ‘ball’ has the same vowel sound as ‘caught’.

Steinberg is very well connected within the Flames organization and has been close to Conroy for a very long time. I would trust him over some anonymous source on the internet.
This makes the trade that much better.

Not necessarily. If the Panthers 2025 pick is top 10 we don’t get it. We get their 2026, which would then be unprotected.

Conroy held all the cards and control and a clearly dealing with a desperate Devils team.
Sure, he listened to other teams, but Markstrom’s value could’ve gone up if another particular team didn’t get an intended UFA goalie or defenseman on July 1. The Devils weren’t going anywhere on Markstrom, two days ago or two weeks from now.
If the Devils wanted to do this deal now, as opposed to 13 days from now, IMO they should’ve paid a further premium.

Who says they didn't pay ‘a further premium’? It's clear that they paid substantially more than their initial offer.

What? This is very narrative driven. You walked yourself into the conclusion you clearly wanted to get to - That Conroy didn't get enough because he didn't wait long enough.
That's balderdash, you have no idea where anything was at with any GM in the league or what was talked about, or who was in or out.

But the beauty of it is that no matter how much a GM gets in a trade, you can always imagine a scenario where he could have got more, and blame him for not doing it.

It’s funny because I used the Smith comparison a lot.
I know a bunch of people that hated that trade for us and thought we overpaid. Some of it was maybe because of the player, but still.
Compare the 2. This is a slam dunk trade.
Not sure what people thought a 34 soon to be 35 year old goalie would fetch.
