I don't know. I hear what you're saying but we can show him the dough. Similar to Messier signing with Vancouver at the end of his career.

Maybe not yet ... but they're different, and not in a bad way.
MacKenzie Weegar is a phenomenal defenceman. As much of a #1 as there is in this league, save for the very top echelon of guys like Makar and Hedman.

Puck doesn't drop tomorrow at 7pm and Flames have more cap space to spend if they wish. And got past the log jam that these two players provided this past 6 weeks, which held up both the on ice makeup of the team and financial structure.

I do wonder if this cap flexibility renews the rumours of Calgary being interested in Kadri

Honestly I'm just here to be stoked for a move this team made. A nice change of pace from the last two weeks that were a slow motion train wreck. If you are wanting to complain about the team being worse at 12:30am on a Saturday that's ok but not for me.

Trade looks good if you look at the names being exchanged but it all centers around Treliving getting both players signed. If he can't well it's that insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. As if the team is in or close to a playoff spot neither player is getting moved at the deadline. If he can it's one of the biggest wins the franchise has ever had.

Would have cost 20+ mil to keep Gaudreau and Tkachuk.
Huberdeau and Weegar cost what, 10 mil? Excuse my laziness
So no, we aren’t better. At the moment. But that’s a lot of flexibility to get there
Edit: all for this season of course

Luckily for Tkachuk, hockey is probably a bit down the list for Floridians and they'll get over it.

In fairness, Tkachuk is probably going to be the draw in S. Florida. He's a big personality, who has a track record of putting up points (in the regular season).

Well yeah, both our players were free agents and these two are players being significantly underpaid. I do wonder if things change of they make a combined $18 million next offseason

Flames are better than yesterday for sure...I think they will be better than right now when the season starts
Lots of things need to go well for the team to be "better" on the ice but they are certainly trending in that direction.
They also have a prospect and a first they didn't have yesterday so they are better in the future too

I meant in terms of the totality of the team next season, the Flames effectively lost 219 points between both Gaudreau and Tkachuk, making the team considerably worse. Adding Huberdeau helps the cause, but the forward group is without a doubt, worse right now than last season having lost 2 x 100 points scorers and adding just one back.

I wouldn't be so sure. Gaudreau's actions may have indirectly awoken BT. This deal makes me believe he is going to start treating these guys like the assets they are.
As big of a BT hater as I am, I just can't see BT rolling the dice again on a very valuable pending UFA if he's not signed on the dotted line. Tkachuk can't turn into Schwindt and a 2025 protect 1st. If one or both isn't signed I think he will move them considering how much value they have.
I'm sure he will do everything in his power to sign them up until he needs to go to plan b.

There's a few different ways to look at this:
For the coming season, Gaudreau + Tkachuk is close to Huberdeau + Weegar. Huberdeau + Weegar is certainly better than just Tkachuk. Overall we took a step back up front but improved our defence. On paper we're about as good as we were last season, just differently balanced. Cancel the fire sale!
However, Huberdeau + Weegar are on cheaper contracts, so we no longer need a cap dump. That's a win!
I don't think there's much point looking at them as rentals, because we're not likely to be deadline sellers, but I think H+W have more rental value than T as well.
The first and Schwindt are just gravy!
Here's the one rub I see though: prior to Tkachuk's trade request, I was looking at 2023 thinking that if we could get two of Tkachuk/Huberdeau/McKinnon, we'd bounce back into cup contention after this season's cap crunch. Well Tkachuk is off the table, and getting 2 out of 2 is tougher than 2 out of 3. How are we going to get value from our cap space? Well, maybe Weegar is the answer and I shouldn't have overlooked him. Or maybe we combine our cap space with some other assets and make a trade. Luckily, we just picked up some non-roster assets that could be used for that.
Great trade.
