How many of you would like to Move to South Africa? Or go on Vacation there?

I have been on vacation there, it was one of our greatest vacations. That being said we had friends there, I am not sure I would just get off a plane and stroll out into the world.

Could live there? Maybe Capetown. It is amazing and safe, by SA standards not Canadian standards.

To me this is the great sadness about SA, just an amazing and lovely place, yet it is total cluster ####.

I'm on vacation in Johannesburg now. It's really sad being here right now - the country lost a great man.

SA still has a lot of major problems but they are much better off now than they were 20 years ago when apartheid was in effect. It's amazing listening to what people say down here. One guy I met said he cried when he was with his mom when she was able to vote for the first time in her life. It's really hard to fathom what life was like here 20 years ago.

I would love to move there one day, assuming it's safe and there is no corruption.

They have so much beautiful land.

Vineyards, Orchards. Huge potential for organic agri-industries.

Hey you should go bungie jumping at the cooling towers in Soweto.

We did and it was extremely enjoyable and well interesting in a way that only Africa can be.

I am jealous of you.

Where else in the country are you going?

Brian Mulroney recalls conversations with Reagan and Thatcher regarding their differences of opinion on Mandela and Apartheid (sorry if posted):

http://news.ca.msn.com/top-stories/n...ed-to-memorial

Quote:
Mulroney recalled a conversation with Reagan in which the president expressed his reservations about Mandela, labelling him a communist.

"And I said, 'Well, how would you know that? He’s been in jail for 27 years. Unless you’ve been talking to him recently you wouldn’t have a clue about his feelings. And all I can say is that I don’t either, but if I were in jail for 27 years and you refused to help me, but Castro did help me through his government and his agencies, then I’d be supporting him when I got out. So you fellows better be careful that you don’t put your countries on the wrong side of history on this matter."

Mulroney said he had a similar frank conversation with Thatcher at a Commonwealth meeting in Vancouver in 1987.

"I said ... what do you think the world would say if four million blacks were holding 35 million whites hostage in Canada and we didn’t have any rights and we didn't have any privileges and we couldn't vote and we didn't have any jobs, no health care, no future, no opportunity? What the hell do you think people would say?

"Margaret took offence at that and I said, 'You shouldn't take offence to that, it's the exact converse of what's happening in South Africa today, and we have to act."

I've been on vacation in RSA six times, three under Apartheid, three post-Apartheid.

My view is skewed because I go to Cape Town, but it is easily the most beautiful city on Earth.

I looked into moving there with a technology company a few years back, but that got interrupted by the classic mistake of falling in love locally. So now it doesn't seem feasible.

Quoted for truth. The entire vibe of the city is different. I loved the place. I bag trouble sleeping and one morning went for a walk and had a coffee at a cafe. Had a lovely time chatting to the locals.

I also looked at moving to CT but my wife didn't feel 100% safe so it was a no go.

My mate still lives there so we will be heading back.

I spent 5 weeks going through South Africa. Loved it. One of my favorite trips and I 100% echo the Capetown comments.

However, so many of their young educated people are leaving. It will be a growing problem as the brain drain will stagnate their economy, which already isn't great but far and away the strongest in central and south portions of t he continent.

Don't be jealous anymore - when I made that post I was pretty much in the airport heading home. So ya, I'm back in Calgary

The trip was incredible - spent time in Cape Town and then slowly made our way along the Garden Route. From PE flew into Sabi Sands Reserve and spent 3 nights at a lodge.

Incredible trip - I'll be going back one day for sure. Where did you visit?

He is an embarrassment to both the city and the country. People who vote for him should be reminded of that every time his shameful name comes up. One day they might figure it out. I doubt they ever will, but there is always hope.
Eh, it's not a sacred cow thing, it's a like talking about american politics and including the outlandish Michelle Bachman. It's a worthless distraction from an utterly contemptible person.

It's the Nancy Grace lens through which to reflect on a significant event.

Complete and utter non-news.

We did a few days in J-burg/Pretoria. My buddy lives on a game reserve there, they don't have big five, but watching a herd of Zerba eat his front lawn was cool. He is a helicopter pilot, so he took us on a tour of J-burg from the air.

As I said he went bungie jumping in Soweto and toured the big brewery in the CBD.

We also went to Cape Town for 5 days, did Table Mountain, went up to Stollennbosch for a few wineries. My wife also wanted to pet a cheetah at the cheetah recovery place (pretty cool). Also when great white diving in shark alley. My other buddy, that live in CT, is a sea captain and took us out on a couple of cruises, including a sunset.

We also went to a private, 5 star, game reserve N/E of J-burg (I think). Were there for 4 days, saw everything but leopard. Sat in a heard of elephants as they ate breakfast.

I see Allison Redford will be attending the funeral. I hope Albertans aren't picking up the tab for her and her husband's trip and accommodations.

She can pay for the trip herself. She's not a head of state and Alberta currently is running a multi billion dollar deficit.

Since we're paying to send Harper, Chretien, Mulroney, Campbell, and I suspect Michaelle Jean and Tom Mulcair, plus all their wives and husbands, that's more than enough representation from Canada.

Well, hell... why don't we just pick up the tab for everyone in this country that wants to attend the funeral?

Naheed Nenshi wants to attend? Hell why not... the City of Calgary will pay.
Don Iveson wants to attend? .... sure .... sounds good to me.. Edmonton can pay.
Danielle Smith wants to attend with Allison? Why not... we've got lots of money laying around to foot the bill.
Hell... lets even invite Rob Ford... we can pay for him too.

Edit: Maybe we can send a few Senators too... They all seem like a deserving lot. What's another few thousand dollars, to add to the budget deficit, eh?

I hope so.. from the comments on here it sounds like a beautiful country. If not, I'd like the taxpayer to foot the bill though.
