Not really. He signed before the season began. The year prior he only played 15 games, mostly with Parise and Kovalchuk. And the year before that he was almost exclusively with Kovalchuk on his wing. He's been pretty fortunate with his linemates but this was his worst full season statistically, on pace for his career low in points. Elias went from a 78 point player with Zubrus and Sykora (although it didn't hurt playing the PP with Kovalchuk and Parise) last year to a 60 point player (pro-rated) this year.

It's official!!
According to NHLnumbers, Edmonton now has the most expensive cap-compliant forward group in the NHL, with the Mighty Oil having a cap hit of $43.6m for their forwards.

And that's with RNH and Yakupov still on their ELCs.
Thank you Samwise Gagner, they couldn't have done it without you.

That verbal promise from McT worked out pretty good for Kruger.
Why wasn't it an NMC for the full length of the deal then?

I think like Carter and Richards you need a certain length of time in league before you can get a NTC but that may have changed in new CBA.

Someone tell Sam Gagner to cancel his Skype account.

Wow. They're 6th in the league in terms of spending. This is MacT's Oilers all over again. A terrible team that was 'rebuilding' but spending to the cap. Its true, its all cyclical!

He was publicly supportive of his coach when he took over the GM chair, as you would expect. No promises were ever made, nor should they have been.

You can't have a NTC/NMC in your RFA years

As much as I despise the oilers, I can't really kill them on the Gagner deal, in isolation. Perhaps too much money (that always seems to be the case), but the dollar/term won't kill them. It just doesn't make sense when you look at the overall line up and the money spent for their smallish forward core.

I think Ganger is a nice enough player but the Oilers would be better off adding a defensive minded 2-way center. Trading Ganger for a Dman and signing Grabovski would have been a better move imo but easier said than done.

They need to dump Hemksy and pick up another defenseman. Douglas Murray is still available and provides a physical need for them.

I wonder if Grabovski has a $6m+ offer from the KHL, and is waiting for an NHL team to match it.
Because he is probably the best centreman in the world without an NHL contract right now, and there are a lot of teams that need what he brings.
And one of those teams rhymes with 'Breadmonton Boilers".
I think Grabovski would be a big upgrade on Gagner, and wouldn't expect him to turn down $5m with NMC etc.

Personally I think it's silly for anyone to say they won't move a player who doesn't have a NM-No Trade clause. If the right deal comes to the Oilers for Gagner they should move him.

7 years of Hall at $6 million is amazing.
I would say they are in pretty good shape up front. Two of their top forwards signed to reasonable long term deals, and all their support guys with 3 years or less.

You're comparing 3 UFA deals to a RFA.

Sort of. Gagner is an RFA now however, the upcoming season will be his last year as such. Any arbiter's ruling or deal ends with him as a UFA so not even a bridge deal was possible. He is an RFA right now, but this deal buys two years of UFA, the last one without the NMC.
The Oilers still face the chance that they could lose him for nothing, but if they do it's their own fault as they will have a chance to trade him for other assets if he's not part of the long-term plan.

Not to mention that the cap is expected to increase next year and losing Hemsky and Smyth will clear an additional 7.25 million in cap space, which alone should cover raises for RNH and Yakupov.
They still have some balancing to do (more $ to the defense - on guys who are worth the money) but they're not in terrible cap shape going forward.

Unfortunately the Oilers have very little depth at center for NHL players or prospects to be able to move Gagner.
And RNH is a sneeze away from throwing out his hip, shoulder, whatever he keeps getting injured.
