Of all the UFAs, you want to re-sign, Tanev and Backlund were clearly great choices. Both have a tremendously positive effect on the game young players. Move out the Lindholms and other sulkers.

I'm happy with the trade, and I trust both Dallas' scouting and our department, both of which obviously liked the guy.
More importantly though, I really like how Conroy is viewing the construction of the team. Targeting a lower-profile defensive dman that isn't flashy on paper, but fills a considerable organizational need shows he knows the elements a team needs to be successful, and he will look to fill all those roles effectively. This trade has increased my confidence in Conroy and the direction he wants to take the team.

If he re-signs in Calgary, then he should be allowed to make that 3rd round pick himself. That's the deal.

I think it was more about whether Tanev is willing to sign an extension right away.
Yesterday before the trade happened, LeBrun said on his podcast that Dallas was fine with having Tanev as a pure rental. He also said teams like Toronto and Vancouver wanted clarity if he would re-sign.
I think the other teams involved may have only been willing to outbid Dallas if Tanev was going to re-sign right away.

That's settled, then. I'm calling him Gru.
I hope when all is said and done, it's opposing players who think he's despicable, and not Flames fans!

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but what are anyones opinions or thoughts on Grushnikov playing in the AHL as a 20 year old Russian? I would assume that pretty much all young Russians that aren't on NHL rosters would just play back in the KHL.
I know his counting stats aren't hot, but would he kind of be betting on himself to crack an NHL roster sooner rather than later?

He played one year of junior over here so he seems focused on developing a career in NA.

two actually. 21-22 and 22-23, both with the Bulldogs. Looks like once he was drafted, he immediately bolted for NA.

I'd seriously doubt he'd be coming back anyway. They couldn't agree on an extension at the start of the year and Ottawa is apparently still anxious to get him.

Don't apologize. I've worked as an editor, and I can tell you with assurance: That is an absolutely beautiful sentence. Every clause follows clearly and logically from the one before, and I had no trouble understanding exactly what you meant. I wasn't even aware of how long the sentence was until you slipped in that apology at the end.
Some people would have sprinkled in a couple more commas, but that is a matter of personal taste.

I caught his interview with Steinberg on the Fan last night. He is all in on north America. "Ever since I was little boy it's my dream to win Stanley Cup" , "I am excited to come to flames...a team with big history, it is exciting that they like me", "I want to say thank you to Hamilton, they did everything to help me, settle anything I needed", etc
Even the Jason scout guy this morning echoed this, he's all in on north america and the NHL , and has no desires about the KHL. Speculation a bit that he feels he owes his parents and family for helping him get here, he is likely a guy that is sending money back home to support his family. Note: I don't have confirmation or certainty with this, sounded a bit speculative from Jason.

Hm? No, I get that from the numerous reports at the start of the season from Friedman etc who spoke about the two being far apart in talks. Tanev wanted term, Flames weren't willing. And Tanev's quote from just today saying they spoke at the start of the year which seems to back that up.
As for Ottawa, that was also a recent report from Friedman, and last night Conroy mentioned that they had offers from non playoff teams as well.
And lastly, again today, he said he wants to win. And Conroy sent him to a team with a chance at winning. Calgary isn't going to be winning anytime soon, so if he (Tanev) doesn't win the cup this spring I can't see him coming back.
1. He wants to win
2. Other teams (Ottawa) will offer more term than Calgary was willing to, and he'll be a year older
I don't see a lot of jumping on my part.

Slightly different players, and who knows what happens, but it's really coming across that we are getting a 20-year old tanev. Great guy, will do anything for his teammates, plays hard defense, knows his role and wants to do anything to win.
