Borys Filatov, the mayor of Dnipro, wrote about today’s shelling of a residential area:
“Let me tell you what happened today. Once there was a family. When the war began, the mother decided to take her kids away from the city, to a safer area. To their Grandma’s. Today a Russian missile flew into their house. The crater that you see in the photos is about 8x10 meters wide. People have literally evaporated. Grandma Alla, mother Natasha, her 12-year-old daughter Vasilisa, and her 8-year-old son Ivan. And their little dog, Jack.
No. I will be completely honest. Some didn't just evaporate. They were found on neighbors' rooftops. On the neighboring streets. And when the rescuers arrived, their old dog Krym was sitting on the ruins, howling. Blinded and deafened by the blast, he was taken to a veterinarian hospital.
And then the father arrived. He is serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and taking part in the counter-offensive near Lyman. May I not continue?”

Russians showing once again what pieces of #### they are by attacking the city of Dnipro which is nowhere near the frontline. Kharkiv seems to be getting hit much less, but now the focus is on attacking cities far from the front. The entire family of a soldier (including 2 children) was murdered by a missile strike as well as other civilians targets. Nothing military related of course, just innocent people because that's all those ####bags know what to do.
Frustrating that Russia still isn't labelled a terrorist state, given how they escalate to attack civilian targets repeatedly.

I feel like the way this ends is Russia gets to keep the four territories it annexed and Ukraine gets to join NATO which helps protect against Russia doing more territory grab once their military replenishes.
That could be the optimist in me. The pessimist noted on the subway yesterday at least two "what to do in case of a radiation emergency" ads.

There's a zero percent chance the Ukranians let their relatives be kept by the Russians. These aren't "territories", or "lands", they're families and the Ukranians are still finding mass graves from previously held areas. I don't see the government having the political will for anything but complete return of their borders

That entire speech - holy crap. That is downright scary. We might truly be on the precipice of World War III.
The only thing giving lots of breathing room to it is:
A) he's losing the war and has no allies left. There's literally nothing to gain for China by helping as the war and Putin are pretty much lost. The first 2 world wars had distinct sides. This is Russia vs everyone and they're already losing. Outside of nukes, Russia has no more tricks up it's sleeve. I can't see China taking Russia's side after a nuke, so I'm not sure there's anything that can change the trajectory here
B) some say ww3 has been going on for a while now (Fiona Hill specifically) but it's a global influence game and not a body bag game now. If this is the case, this seems to point to the burning out of one of the West's enemies.
I hope you guys are right. That said, even without an escalation in war there will inevitably be a new Iron Curtain that hangs in Eastern Europe, and will simply serve to divide. What's old is new again, with both sides living in constant fear and military readiness.

No real disagreement with the rest, but I wish to point out that Serbia can't possibly agree to split country referendums under any circumstance, as it would require them to dispense of Kosovo and potentially surrounding territory. Possibly it would even open them up to worse #### internally. China also notably won't accept this (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, XinJiang, etc.) It's a confusing play politically because everyone knows it's a sham and even their "allies" (more, not-enemies) are telling them it's a ####ing stupid and pointless idea.
One of the rare "Tibet" mentions on CP! Yes, back in the 90's, I remember Tibetan organizations calling for a referendum within Chinese occupied Tibet (under the auspices of international groups), as a response to China's claim that Tibetans were happy and prosperous under Chicom rule. Of course, as you mentioned in your post, China never accepted this. Tibet like Ukraine, was a free and independent country until it was totally annexed in 1951. Even if "pseudo independent" or full independence is up for debate, at the very least, there were hardly any Chinese people in Tibet until their invasion. It was excellent that Chairman Mao noted this fact when discussing the planned invasion of Tibet, as this fact often stumps the average Chinese person when they try to intimidate and argue with us Tibetans on the history of Tibet. Mao said something along the lines of, Tibet being different than other invaded places, because there were hardly any Chinese in Tibet, just a diplomats, representatives and small community in the capital. They are always flustered in how to respond when you tell them that, how can we be part of China if most Tibetans had never even seen a Chinese person before? Ask any Tibetan from pre-1959 Tibet, you would be hard pressed to find a Chinese person living in Tibet, especially outside of their small enclave in the main city. How can you sign documents claiming a free country is yours, if none of your people even live there? How absurd! Anyways, thanks for the Tibet mention, and Slava Ukraini! We know what Ukraine is going through all too well.

Are Ukrainian forces now operating in the annexed territories, or are they still marching toward them?
Lyman is in Donetsk Oblast, the Russians are nearly or by some accounts completely surrounded and will fall in the next couple of days. Zaporizhzhia is the capital of it's Oblast and was never captured. The Russians don't completely control any of the "annexed" territories, even Luhansk with the breakout from Kharkiv in the North.
