If Jagr didn’t go play 3 seasons in the K, he’d be 200 games more than anyone else.

FTR i strongly believe that Gordie would not care one tiny iota about someone breaking this record. He would no doubt congratulate Marleau publicly and privately, because he was just an amazing person and way beyond anything remotely close to as petty as this.

And breaking this record does not in any way approach Marleau to Howe. It's one record, Howe is part of the untouchable pantheon of Hockey gods.

Don’t forget the 3 lockouts.

I agree with the comment above, this record isn’t even what made Howe what he was as a player. It doesn’t matter if it’s broken.

Lmao.

I look forward to the day Ovi pulls up on a one-timer while sitting on goal #894 out of respect.

EDIT: Wow, lifetime'd. It was a stupid statemeny, but not ban worthy.

Yeah, and frankly, trotting out old man Howe at age 51 to play with Mark and poor old Marty seemed like a PR stunt at the time. Back then only about 4-5 teams had a shot at the cup, because they were so good, so it didn’t even matter.

Patty Marleau is not only on the verge of playing the most NHL games in history, he's also less than a season away of playing the most consecutive games in NHL history (or second most, if Yandle also doesn't miss a game) (possibly third most, if Kessel plays longer than him and also doesn't miss a game).

To put things in perspective, he hasn't missed a single game since sometime during the 08-09 season. He's played every single game on every team he's been with for the last 12 years and counting.

That's some insane durability.
He played 74 games in his rookie season. That's the fewest games he's ever played on an 82 game season. Incredible.

I don't get why people care about Howe's WHA games.

Everything was different, nothing is ever a straight up comparison and records are cool but also silly and don't really matter.

Most NHL games played is most NHL games played. That's a worthy record on its own.

It's not like Howe is going to be forgotten if Marleau manages to break that record. And I hope he does get it, because it would be cool for him and I think he deserves ro get there.

Does he move again at the deadline? If so he'd probably be a 12/13 bubble player on most good teams. 13 more games for the Sharks before the deadline would leave him 4 shy at that point.

And it’s not like he doesn’t go to the hard areas. And we’ve all seen the Sarich hit...

Marleau is a beast.

Couldnt have said it better myself.

Mad respect for Marleau for his career, but mostly for popping up after that hit and getting on with it.

Congrats to Marleau on a heck of a career!

I have a Marleau memory I’ll probably never forget. I played against him one year in bantam hockey. Our team hated him because his team always destroyed us and I hated him because I was a goalie.

One time I was at the canteen after probably our biggest blowout loss of the year to them and it was busy mostly with their team members. Most of their players were acting like a bunch of typical teenage jocks after a nice win. However, Marleau was incredibly humble, gracious and polite. He probably even knew I was the goalie he just lit up, but he acted toward me as if the roles were reversed.

I was totally blown away by this encounter given how minor hockey “star prospects” typically act and I couldn’t help but like him and root for him ever since. I don’t know if karma is real, but my one game after my change of heart was our only win against their team and the only game he didn’t score on me. When I stopped him on a breakaway and he banged his stick, it literally was probably the peak of my hockey “career”. Lol

Anyways, all the best to him and I hope he has a great post-NHL life.

Yeah not to take anything away from Marleau, because it's an amazing record.

But definite honorable mention to Jagr,

And...

Back to Howe, if you count the WHA it's not even close. Nobody will ever come close to that. Of course both Howe and Jagr made their respective decisions so full respect to Marleau if he pulls it off (Thornton right behind him)
