Maybe if Tony played more than 30 playoff games. I actually had to google him. At least he saw the light and stayed away from NA after being drafted by the Oilers.

He's played at least 178 playoff games. So you now agree he is HHOF worthy and that's binding.

Hockeydb just in on the conspiracy to keep Tony Hand down, check out something like Elite Prospects.

I always found it baffling that Mark Messier didn't stick around just a bit longer to take this record on. Messier was 11 games short.

Really a bit of an empty record when you take into account that Howe also had 419 professional games in the WHA that don't count towards the NHL record.

The '04 lockout pretty much ruined his chance at getting that record. Although I can't recall if there was any hype at the time for Messier coming close. It seems that this is one of those ''all-time'' records that doesn't garner as much hype as the points or goals records do.

I know when Jagr signed last season there was a good amount of hype with him approaching the record. I even bought tickets to the Flames vs Knights game on the night he would have broken it (assuming he played every game).

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Messier likely didn’t want to take the record away from Howe.

Somebody will have a chat with Patrick about this as well.

That...doesn't seem to make sense. Records are meant to be broken, or at least attempted to be broken. So you're saying if Marleau gets close to the record, someone's going to start dissuading him from doing it? Doesn't that just cheapen Howe's record then?

Why?

If a record is maintained only through the manufactured means of ensuring that others either choose or are prevented from breaking it, then it is no record at all. If Marleau has to be encouraged to leave the record alone, then it is probably not a record worth remembering in the first place.

That would be a funny conversation.

"Listen Patrick, I know you feel good and can make $700,000 for playing a game, but we really don't want you to break Gordie Howe's record for NHL games played, for reasons."

"Oh, okay. That sounds totally reasonable. I'll quit now and take a job at the car dealership."

WHA was a joke league with junk players. Shouldn't include them.

I dunno, with this line of thinking I'm not sure you can really count Gordie's final season. Though to be fair, even then Howe produced at about the same level as Messier's last year and Marlo currently.

His record of 26 full seasons will remain. A dash of critical thinking reminds us that seasons were only 60 games long for Howe's first 3 years, and didn't go above 70 until he was 38 years old. His feat remains insanely impressive regardless of where it ranks under reg. season gp.

If we include playoff games, he's already been passed. Again, PO's weren't as long, so it's apples to bananas.

time to bump this as he's getting closer.

I have mixed feelings about it as I grew up (and got old) with Gordie Howe being the gold standard for longevity in the game.
Good for Marleau be so healthy for so long.
He would have broken the record ages ago if it wasn't for lockouts.

If someone has to break the record, at least it's a player I like and always kind of respected.

Breaking records is 10000x more interesting than someone holding a record for eternity.

At least Carbonneau is a defensive legend that won the Selke 3x, was a runner-up 3x, and had three additional top5 Selke finishes.

Marleau has zero accomplishments. His career points numbers aren't good (only one top 10 points finish). He doesn't have a cup, nor is he known for being an excellent playoff performer. He doesn't have a good AS voting record.

Breaking the all-time games played record is impressive, but merely being good for a long period of time doesn't mean that you were great enough to be deserving of a HHOF induction.

Messier was an egotistical ass. If he could have he would have.
