Default Patty Marleau close to becoming all-time leader in games played

https://records.nhl.com/records/skat...s/most-seasons

Marleau needs 63 games to pass Gordie Howe for most games played all-time. SJ has 30 games left this season, which means he (potentially) only needs to play ~1/3 of one more season to get there.

Pretty crazy!

They make ‘em durable in Saskatchewan - Aneroid SK could overtake Floral SK early next season!

As with most Gordie Howe records they don't include the 419 games he played in the WHA. Still a huge amount of games though, Marleau has been amazingly durable throughout his career.

Might be the quietest breaking of one of the ''all-time'' records ever. Still that's a crazy accomplishment. I feel bad for Howe though. Anybody who plays that many games into their 50s deserves to keep it.

Hall of famer?

Points are similar to Brindamour, Whitney, Turgeon, and Roenick. All of whom are not in. But Marleau has played ~300 more games then all of them...I think he gets in because Carbonneau set the bar incredibly low this year but should open the debate for others as well.

Hopefully he wins a cup this year. It might be his last.

If he breaks this record, he's a definite Hall of Famer IMO. Probably on first year of eligibility.
561 goals is pretty darn good.

I have always liked Marleau/Thornton a lot more than Perry/Getzlaf, for what it's worth.

Marleau getting in would seemingly strengthen the cases of Alfredsson, Fleury, etc

Marleau has almost 1200 points in his career and is currently 50th ALL TIME in scoring, mostly through the low scoring eras of the NHL. If he can't get in with those numbers, I don't know who would going forward. He's an absolute lock for the hall if I had a vote.

He is 100% a Hall if Famer, first ballot, if his career ended today.

Now the games played record is not really “the” record for me, because of Howe’s WHA games. But Marleau is one durable SOB and one player I have always admired.

If Marleau is inducted into the HHOF can he be announced entry by Corey Sarich? Maybe make a couple of sudden movements during the announcement to see if Marleau flinches?

Gordie also took two seasons off between Detroit and Houston.

15th in adjusted goals (more than Messier, Lemieux, Dionne, Gartner, etc. - the 14 ahead of him are all 1st ballot HOF...another 8-10 goals and he overtakes Sakic, Bobby Hull, and Yzerman), 30th in adjusted points.

Guess I have to be the one to poop on the Gordie games played parade a little bit. Not sure how many people here are old enough to watch the tail end of his career, but that final season in Hartford (80 games) might have been one of the biggest farces in pro sports history. Everybody was afraid to go anywhere near him and pretty much let him skate around at will because of his legendary status (and were afraid to be the one to accidentally hurt an old man who really had no business being out there).

A lot of players have horrible last seasons. I don’t disagree that those last 80 games were a lot for publicity (not that I saw much, or any of it) but he was one of the better WHA players before that.

I don’t think you can really diminish Howe’s career achievements.

Didn't this sort of apply to the last 5 years of Gretzky, too?

Yeah, he was always one stiff-breeze away from a career-ender himself and nobody wanted to go down in the history books as 'that guy.'

I don’t really get the reason why people want to include WHA stats in an NHL record. They were competing leagues. Howe started in the NHL, went to the WHA and then back to the NHL. Should we include Jagr’s KHL stats?
