Both Poirier and Button said that he is actually a Right Wing.

Just some posts on the evil board (HF) and through Twitter.
I don't know if its for sure, just some indications that Montreal was very high on the kid.
Also Redline report had the Habs taking him at 25th

Monahan made sense as a pick - I hope he is great. I wish his highlight videos were better so I could get a better sense of his upside.
Poirier - I had only heard of him because Woodleif (I think) picked him as the sleeper, but I think there is a lot to like there
Klimchuk - my favorite selection... so impressed with his release and his skating looks great. Seems like he has a great head on his shoulders since he shares my appreciation for Saprykin
Kanzig - don't like this one at all and I would love to hear some kind of explanation. Low point of the draft in my mind. I was hoping for Andrighetto here.
Roy - sounds intriguing . I am a little concerned that the Flames keep drafting players from terrible teams, but he sounds like he has some NHL potential.
Harrison/Rafikov/Gilmour - who knows... but last year they got some decent players with late picks so I have some faith

Choice of 3rd or so best player on a great tem, thereby having inflated stats from great teammates (Nemisz) or best player on a bad team, having to do it all himself (Roy).

Completely agree.
Really glad we got Monahan. But after Monahan, my next favourite was Nurse - really, really impressed with him and wish we could have found a way to get Monahan AND Nurse.
Oh well, it will be a while before he is NHL ready - hopefully the Oilers get impatient and trade him before then

I'm very happy with this draft. We essentially drafted a top six line:
LW - Klimchuk, C - Monahan, RW - Poirier
Both Button and Poirier said he plays RW with a little LW. The fact he's a left-handed shot with blazing speed coming down the right-side seems like something to get excited about.

i would say 8/10.
Monahan-been a fan all along. If you want a big #1 center, you gotta draft them. Outstanding hockey sense-which is important for a center, and underrated offense and two-way ability.
Poirier-i don't believe we will be sorry they passed on Shinkaruk for this guy. Unbelieveable skater who plays well in all 3 zones, plus-he has size and plenty of grit.(they listed him at 6'1.5" on TSN)
Klimchuk-looks like a poor mans Eberle. draft day stats of both players are eerily similar.
Kanzig-read a scouting report a few hours ago that said something like,"if he is mad stay out of his vicinity". that said,he shouldve been picked much later.
Roy-despite reports that he lacks hockey sense, i think hes a steal. Big, quick, plays with an edge and can put up numbers. his team was horrible this year.
Harrison- crasher and banger? totally off the map.
Rafikov-like him based on scouting reports. 6'1", plays with an edge, good puck skills indicating a possible offensive upside(although he's a defensive guy) and a good skater. Recommended to Conny by Igor Kravchuk i hear.
Gilmour-20 year old undersized d-man who plays on Jankowski's team. Kind of a head scratcher......
all in all, pretty excited about the new guys.

A bit too early to rate, but I'm excited about our picks.
I'm wondering, what if we'd been picking 5th instead of Carolina? Would Feaster still have shot for Monahan, or was it Lindholm that we really wanted?

I wanted Ryan Hartman with one of our later picks. He reminded me of Clutterbuck. Porier is a cool pick though. He seems like a Lombardi clone when I saw him skate.

Boy does Monahan ever look good in a flaming C jersey!!
Good draft. Happy that Feaster stuck with Plan A.
Major focus on offence in the 1st round. Picked up 3 skilled forwards in a deep 1st round. I really like Klimchuck, & Poirier is a swing-for-the-fences type pick.
Very pleased he picked Eric Roy so late. He is an absolute steal where we picked him.
Have to rate the drafting B+. I really wish they would pick some players with RH shots occasionally.

8 / 10
First Round - Nailed it. I really like all three picks.
Third Round - Miss. The only pick I don't like. It seems we prioritized adding "nastiness" instead of sticking to the list. Baptiste, Lodge, or Hayden would have made this draft a complete success in my opinion.
Fifth Round - Good selection. Highly touted prospect who suffered a down year on an extremely poor team. High Reward selection
Sixth Round - Can't comment, but he sounds like a very intelligent kid that provides size and some offensive potential.
Seventh Round - It is hard to dislike any 7th round selection. Hopefully one of them pans out, and if not.. who cares.

Like so many others I was disappointed to pass on Shinkaruk and take Poirier. I'm gonna see how it plays out though because I've warmed up to the pick after a little research.
My biggest disappointment is actually not having a 2nd rounder. I had Valentin Zykov on my wish list for a long time and he would have been right there for us with pick #36.
Overall on draft day I give us an 8/10 for the first round which is all I can really speak on...

Pretty crazy how many left handed shots we have in the system vs. right handed shots.....on forward and D.
Even this draft had only one RH shot in Harrison.

Monahan was a no brainer.
Love the Poirier and Klimchuk picks. Love that in both their highlight packages, they are constantly attacking and crashing the net. Love fearless players like that. Hate perimeter players, glad we've gotten rid of a bunch of them this year.
Everyone is scratching their head over the Kanzig pick including me, but if he even makes to the show as a goon, it's still a player.
Roy is intriguing, but some reports point to a lack of hockey sense in the defensive end, which is surprising given the emphasis on smarts. I've read of a comparison to Johnny Boychuk, which would be great if he could develop like that.
I like the Gilmour pick in the 7th, simply because he's a 20 year old, so you know the Flames have a better idea of his potential, and also the fact that they've seen him lots. Maybe won't be anything special, but could be a serviceable pro.

I'm surprised to see all the positive posts, reading the draft thread you'd think there would be people jumping off buildings.
Seemed like some good players picked to me, mind you I don't know much about any of them except Monahan.

Tod Button, the Calgary Flames’ director of amateur scouting, runs through the team’s eight picks from the National Hockey League draft Sunday at the Prudential Center:
* 6. C Sean Monahan (six-two, 187, OHL Ottawa): “We really like him. He has a chance to be a real high-end player in the NHL. He plays every situation. He’s a centreman, which certainly fills a positional need. He’s got size. He’s got character. A lot of intangibles.”
* 22. RW Emile Poirier (six-one, 183, QMJHL Gatineau): “We see Poirier as a scrappy goal-scoring winger who’s got speed and power. He’s a real hound around the net. He’s persistent. He’s another guy — we think he can play in the top-six down the road. He can contribute. Not just a one-dimensional guy. The versatility of these kids . . . it’s certainly a bonus.”
* 28. LW Morgan Klimchuk (five-11, 180, WHL Regina): “Morgan’s such a smart player. He can play in any situation. Kills penalties. Plays on the power play. Individually, he’s probably not a dynamic player. But the way he fits in, in any situation. He does have an unbelievable release and he’s a great shooter. But we don’t see him as a one-dimensional goal scorer. Even though he was on a weak team this year in Regina, he scored in the 30s. All three of those (first-round) guys had 30 goals and 70 points, right?”

All three first rounders aren't tiny and by the sounds of it have high hockey IQ. That's good!
After that I have never seen any of them play (Ok I also haven't seen one of our 1st rounders play)
Are really actually to the point of trying to judge 3rd and 5th round picks?
I think it was a good foundation draft, but we really need to finish low the next 2 years and be patient

I give it a 9.5.
I would have hated the Flames to trade any firsts for any players that rumors were swirling around (i.e. Matt Read). Love the first 3 picks - Emile was a bit of a headscratcher at first. I wanted Zykov badly. However, Emile is faster (well, who isn't he faster than?), a very smart player, creates turnovers like mad, breakaway speed and finish, and is gritty! What isn't there to like about him? I was hoping for Hunter, but... too many guys on the board were saying: "Noooo" to Hunter. Hunter was falling... and even 2 years ago when Hunter first came into my radar, I heard bad things. Tough to pass up a player with top-notch elite skills, but he would not fit into what the Flames are building.
Klimchuck - God do I love this pick. Elite finisher. Goes into the corners. Has an all-round solid game and is the type you throw on any line to 'complete' it.
Kanzig - this is where the Flames lose the .5 in my mind. Not so much that they picked him, but didn't trade down to do so. However, maybe they were that sure. Maybe they saw other scouts looking at this kid from teams in that area. Initially, I thought it was all about drafting a 'goon'. Now I look at him as a project. If he is that intelligent and that good of a leader on and off the ice, there is upside. Plays against everyone's top lines - not many goons in the WHL do that, do they? Makes me think this pick CAN be so much more than just a goon in the NHL, but will definitely be a project.
Roy - 1st round potential. Brandon was such a weird team this past season. Size, agility and offensive upside. TJ Brodie was not solid in his own end at that age either. Not to say he will develop that well, but gives me a reason to at least be somewhat optimistic that they can round this guy into a good top 4 defencemen.
Love Rushan! If his name kept popping up in conversations, it is a good thing. Surprised someone at his calibre was available, as it seems he is not your prototypical Russian. Looks like a very solid 'gamble' on a pick that has a fairly complete game.
Button made the other picks sound good. We will see. Weisbrod is very adamant that they Flames not 'gamble' on the backend of the draft, and treat even a 7th round pick as if it was a 1st (or something like that from a previous interview). Matt Deblouw is a guy Flames picked in the 7th round last season that I think projects into a very real possibility of becoming an NHL player down the road, so hopefully a couple of these picks strike a bit of gold too.
Really huge step forward for this organization today. I like how they Flames are continuing to draft guys who seem to fit the puck-possession game, and who are thought of as being good characters with high compete levels. Bodes well for the future having guys who have loads of character and intangibles.
