The Kanzig pick definitely lowers the overall for me. I'm sure this goon D man would have been available later on in the draft.

9/10...got all four of the "S's" in the first round...skill, size, speed, substance. All 3 players seem to be team leaders, can put up points, have agility and quickness (esp. Poirer) and come with good/great hockey sense. I am VERY pumped about the top 3.
Kanzig is clearly a project, who has taken big steps in the W. Dont know anything about the rest...but the writeups on Roy show potential.

What can you tell us about Kanzig? Is he a diamond in the rough?

-12/10. The draft is no fun unless you trade away a 21-year-old potential franchise player for a bag of magic beans, and then go out and draft an 18-year-old potential franchise player at the same position, because, you know, guys are *so* over the hill at 21.
This is why Mike Milbury will always be my personal hero.

Pretty cool to come out of this draft with Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk and Corban Knight.

11/13. I wanted Baptiste in the 3rd but I'm no scout.

It depends what the score is relative to... 9.5/10 relative to the potential in their 7 picks over 7 rounds ... Having 3 1sts obviously gives them a huge leg up here, and the picks look solid.
Relative to the potential of he picks they went into the draft with, I say 7/10. I feel Feaster missed a BIG opportunity by not trading down before the 3rd round pick. The deals were there as other teams around them took advantage... It's likely Feaster could have also had Poirier after trading down a few spots as well (impossible to know for sure)
Not trading down in those spots brings Feasters score way down for me.
I'll never complain about the actual players, as I've never seen them play.

The only thing that would have made the draft better was to trade for a second round pick and select Zykov.
Also, if instead of Kanzig, I wanted Peter Cehlarik or Oliver Bjorkstrand

No. His skating has a long way to go to make it. Was much better this year over last year. That said, he should not have been on the ice last year and he could not have gotten any worse. He is big, mean and will win fights. Can't play with the puck on is stick for more than a 3 seconds. Bottom pairing d-man if he does make it. The kind of player that other teams players and fans hate. If he makes it to the flames he will get some love. If he is traded, that love will be gone.

I'd say 9/10.
Love all 3 first rounders. If we couldn't land a top two d-men at any of the picks then offensive skill is badly needed as well.
Monahan - Big, playmaking centre. Perfect fit really after Mac/Barkov are gone.
Poirier - Haven't seen him but love the description of his game. Great youtube highlights if that counts for anything lol.
Klimchuk - Like the sounds of him as well.
Kanzig I can't complain about since I love size on defense. Does seem like he would probably be a 3rd pairing guy at best but interesting that Button just loves his intelligence. Sounds like the Flames saw this guy as a real sleeper.
Get some more depth on D later on. As Feaster and Button have said, nice mix of skill, size, forwards, defense, grit, speed, etc in this draft.
But most importantly we took three nice swings of the bat at getting impact forwards in this deep 1st round. Wouldn't it be great if all three of them turned out to be better than picks like Tkaczuk, Fata, Saprykin, Nystrom, Kobasew, Nemisz, Chucko? If we end up with three guys close to Baertschi in terms of upside we're in a lot better shape today than we were yesterday. I like the looks of them so far. Time to be patient and let them develop into NHLers.

Getting Monahan at 6 makes it a win. That was obviously the most important pick and they got it right. Just getting that pick alone makes it a positive draft in my view.
Not a fan of the Poirier pick at all and reading/watching You Tube clips isn't doing much to change that. Think there were a lot better options there and certainly guys with a lot more upside.
Klimchuk is fine at 28 not great but not bad either.
Kanzig is a puzzling pick as the only thing he seems to have close to being at an NHL level is size.
Late picks are meh, Roy seems like he may be a decent shot with his offense, Harrison is a puzzling pick and the rest are the usual late round type picks.
Again because of Monahan I think it is a successful draft but it seems like it could have been so much better and there is some disappointment largely based on how high my expectations were.

I will give it an 8/10 strictly based on my expectations.
Monahan made sense as a pick - I hope he is great. I wish his highlight videos were better so I could get a better sense of his upside.
Poirier - I had only heard of him because Woodleif (I think) picked him as the sleeper, but I think there is a lot to like there
Klimchuk - my favorite selection... so impressed with his release and his skating looks great. Seems like he has a great head on his shoulders since he shares my appreciation for Saprykin
Kanzig - don't like this one at all and I would love to hear some kind of explanation. Low point of the draft in my mind. I was hoping for Andrighetto here.
Roy - sounds intriguing. I am a little concerned that the Flames keep drafting players from terrible teams, but he sounds like he has some NHL potential.
Harrison/Rafikov/Gilmour - who knows... but last year they got some decent players with late picks so I have some faith

Poirier seems to have a Mason Raymond - Geoff Sanderson upside, based on my thorough expert analysis of 2 YouTube clips

Monahan was the right guy, but obvious. Might've liked a trade up to 5 to get Lindholm, depending on the price.
Don't like that we passed on Shinkaruk at 22, even though Poirier looks like a decent pick.
Klimchuk is a solid but unspectacular pick at 28.
Kanzing is not the type of player to take the in third round, would've liked a Bjorkstrand or similar instead.
Fourth and beyond, it's all the same to me.

- Obviously a big focus was on our first round and I think the Flames did very well. All three players have excellent skill sets, work ethics and play a good two-way game. Most important for me, great attitudes and leadership qualities it seems. We need people who will help shape a new culture for the team.
- To go with the above, I love the emphasis the Flames seem to be putting on the attitude of the player they draft. Baertschi as an example from last year as well - obviously has skills but reportedly also has a great attitude and work ethic of always wanting to get better. Very important when drafting IMO and it seemed like in a lot of the interviews and analysis I heard today of the players we drafted the positive attitude was evident.
- Like the mix of the picks we made on a variety of fronts - Positions, skills, different leagues, ages, projects, "safe, sure things" vs. "high risk, high reward" type picks. Lots of variety.
- As an aside, regarding the Poirier vs. Shinkaruk pick. When I start to suddenly see teams passing up on a guy who was supposed to go way higher in the draft for no apparent reason, red flags pop up. Not saying this was the case here but perhaps there's something going on behind the scenes none of us are privy to that caused a bunch of teams to pass on him. I also like what kind of a player Poirier is and think he was a good pick regardless. Seems as the dust settles and people take a breath others might be re-evaluating their initial opinion as well.
Overall 7/10 for me.

to be honest, this is what i expected coming into this thread:
im surprised people are as optimistic as they are, usually its time to go for the kill after any sort of change or event on this forum.
8.5/10
but i think im a bit of an hopeless romantic with the flames, so its tough to be mad at them.

Pretty much as expected. Nothing outside of the box, but nothing too crazy. They played it pretty safe.
