I dont think all of those trades would happen but I can see at least one of those happening.

The Flames are in a better position than most think.
Players in contract years ramp it up and perform at their best. If all the UFA’s have greet years, then they will be a solid team and the likes of Lindholm will sign sooner than later.
Some players buckle under the contract year pressure, if that transpires, these guys will come in cheaper on their next contracts.
So I think the Flames know what they are doing and which ones will step it up and push this team closer to the top of division as opposed to mediocre. It’ll set the environment and the coaching staff will be much more tolerable.
What doesn’t work will be trade deadline dealings. Where teams often over pay.

The Sabres have a very talented and productive forward group. Five guys with 59 or more points (Backlund finished third in Flames scoring with 56). And they have a bunch of highly-regarded prospects pushing for spots. This isn’t the Sabres of three seasons ago.
I’m not a fan of Olofsson. But being pushed out of the Sabres top-six or PP isn’t evidence of being a terrible player these days. Not when you have Thompson, Skinner, Tuch, Cozens, Mittlestadt, and Quinn fighting for ice time.
The Sabres are poised for a NJD type surge. They’re going to surprise a lot of people.

The Devils say hi. Out of the playoffs for 9 out of the last 10 years, and then finish 3rd OA in the league and win a round in the playoffs.

And outside of Dahlin? I'm not sure I see that overwhelming talent that would take them to the top.

You don’t see 25 year old, 6’6”, 94 point #1C Tage Thompson as elite? How about 22 year old, 6’3”, 68 point #2C with a great two-way game Dylan Cozens? Or 20 year old, 6’6”, 34 point, 24 minutes a night d-man Owen Power? And that’s not even including 79 point Alex Tuch and 81 point Jeff Skinner, who both scored more points than anyone on the Flames last season.
Throw in 23 year old, 6’3”, 78 point Norris-conversation Dahlin, and the Sabres have an incredible young core. They also have one of the top-rated group of prospects beyond those guys.

Dahlin is elite.
Tage Thompson is a very good player no doubt. I'm not nearly as sold on Cozens as stat watchers are, good young talent but has lot to prove still like many others on that roster, like Power. But these are players that have been drafted high because the team has been so bad for so long, so you would expect them to have this talent. But they are by no means a slam dunk, championship team caliber players yet (outside of Dahlin).
Tuch is their leader, to me he seems to be the guy that makes that team tick. That's another guy who I would absolutely love to have. Him and Dahlin. But a lot of teams have one or two great pieces.

I’ve see you have back tracked from not having “overwhelming talent” with one elite player to calling Thompson “ a very good player”, to Cozens and Power being “good young talent”, to suggesting they only have this talent because of high draft picks, to summarizing that they are “by no means a slam dunk championship team”.
No one said they were. They just said they have a good foundation in place.
Oh yeah, plus Tuch who you indicate is their leader and you’d love to have.
You basically admitted you were wrong and they gave a wealth of talent.

I think you can say other teams did well with their limitations to some degree, and Calgary didn't, but it wasn't a fed narrative that there was a huge salary disparity.
The Flames fell under the league average starting to the 1990-91 season and then slipped further and further.
From 1997-98 thru 2003-2004 they were 25% below the league average and an average of 33M below the top spender in an era that had an average team salary of 34M.

In the Button years the Flames would spend too much on veterans while not having good young players or mid level guys. I remember than having like 6 guys making over 2 million a year with Turek/Vernon/Kravchuck/Boughner/Rob Niedermayer/Conroy. Out of that group only Conroy and Turek were impact type places in the lineup. Button was just a bad GM. The Flames were spending, but weren't spending in the right place. Other teams like Ottawa/Vancouver/Edmonton were getting much better value out of similar payrolls.

I’d trade Calgary’s entire roster for Buffalo’s no questions asked. If nothing else at least most of their top players are under 25.

Buffalo has missed the playoffs for 12 straight years. I would hope they have some good young players.

But they also got some good draft lottery luck where a team like Detroit hasn’t.

I know a team that finished 6th, first in their division, won a round in the POs. Finished out of the POs the very next year.

Im hoping those ambitions get crushed by an 0-10 start. And the owner has to face reality.

Yeah at this point they should have a lot of good young talent. It seems like a lot of people who push hard for a rebuild think theFlames would amass that type of young talent in 3 years. When you challenge them and suggest it could be 8 to 10 until they would emerge as a strong team that makes the playoffs consistently and as an upper level seed, they pass it off saying they would do it right.
I'd be okay with a rebuild myself. But I expect that it could be 8 years until a real strong perennial top 5 team could be built if not longer.

Buffalo has had good lottery luck? They missed out on McDavid. I wouldn't categorize that as good luck.
Just to add, looking back at the draft where Detroit fell, it was definitely in their favour as Raymond will probably be better than the players picked 1 and 2 that year. Detroit was probably lucky to lose that draft lotto.
