Gaudreau has five years remaining on his deal, Huberdeau seven. It’s worse than you think and even more reason why Columbus wouldn’t consider it for a second.
The only redeeming thing to say about Huberdeau’s contract is that for at least 4 of the 8 years the Flames should be a rebuilding team and that contract should not present too significant an issue to work around. There will be a time, though, that something is going to have to happen whether it be a buyout, trade with heavy retention, or Robidas island.

I wonder if we see Ekblad and Knight traded today.

….and easier to flip for assets down the road, if that’s the preferred option.

I know, it’s strange. Why do NHL teams want good players? It’s as though GM’s are trying to improve their teams, or something? WTF are they thinking?

I haven’t heard anything new yet.
Sounds like most guys have been signed and it’s just a matter of announcing
Same targets I said before were a priority for Craig.
I know Calgary called on Kakko but no idea the cost.
I still feel like Duclair will be a flame.
DeBrusk was a very real target but if a bidding war took place CGY likely would be out, won’t offer the term other teams would.
Still hearing Copley as a goalie target though another names come up as well, I’ve inquired but haven’t heard.
Dumba remains of interest on a buy low veteran presence
I asked about Gio on a 1 year no word yet
No Monahan here pretty much confirmed.
CGY remains open to take on bad contracts, though it sounds like teams would rather buyout then give a prime asset to take a contract thus far.

What's Spencer Knight worth at this point?

There are better way to improve your team than overpaying 34 yrs old that probably won’t help you much because your team is not ready
Overpaying older FAs looking for retirement contract has rarely worked

Guaranteed that thought went through Trelivings head while signing the Huberdeau deal.

Not the thread for it but I guarantee you the main thought going through his head was that he had to get a management "win" having lost two of their best players suddenly. He couldn't bear to lose in ownership's eyes, on a player he just acquired. 8 years? Who cares, I need a "win" or my career looks like I can't sign big fish.

This is where ownership would step in and stop the gm from being a dummy.
That said... I think teams are just building in buyouts to their plans now. Flames did it with the Kadri deal. The elite guys end up with contracts you can't buy out with bonuses.

Good. The "Enternal Buyout Well" will soon run out pretty quickly once signings have happened or even mid season moves.
Teams can pay the premium now or mid season.

I'm surprised Dallas hasn't jumped on anyone like him yet.
