Good pick by the Canes, their fans have to be laughing at getting him at 28

True, boom or bust...but if a guy like Kaliev had "high end compete", he'd be a top 5 pick!

I don't think I have seen too many players learn how to compete at this level. At the OHL level you can still out skill players, but that's not going to happen at the NHL.

Didn't really like the Suzuki pick. Reading a lot of reports that he is a perimeter player.

Ducks take Brayden Tracey at 29, whom there was speculation the Flames liked

Damn. The Ducks pick Tracey #29. I don't want to hate him.

With Kaliyev and Lavoie, I am guessing Treliving and Button would know the kids better and the fact that they are falling, tells me that they didn't interview well and teams are afraid of the lack of effort level.
The playoffs showed that you need high end compete and high end skill I think Pelletier has both of those. I liked Hoglander a little better, but I think they are very close.

Do you have a scouting report questioning Lavoie's work ethic / effort level?

Curious too. First I'm hearing of it, but with how much he's fallen I have to think there's something to it

I have to laugh a little bit. I'm in NC and watching the NBCSN feed. They've really been trying to hype up that this is the 'year of the Americans' and 'a record number of Americans could be picked in the 1st round'. I'll give credit where credit is due as their have been some American studs picked, but this has been mostly a Canadian dominant draft.

The amount of Finns in the top 20 is what struck me the most

Read that too, and at 15-20 I wouldn't like the pick. But at 28 I don't think it's bad

Means very little but I just went back and looked at my list for the CPHL draft - and I had both Lavoie and funny enough Broberg highlighted in red - which is my own code for don't draft.
But I can't recall why I flagged Lavoie with that.
I had Pelletier at 27.

Maybe a bad interview. Lavoie was highly regarded for his work ethic. Also could create goals out of nothing and drove his line offensively. Guess we'll see.
