Best of both worlds really. CBJ is in a cap/budget crunch. They need to unload salary to sign Jones and remain under budget. Flames can either take back a bad salary with a quality asset or they can wait and try to get a quality asset with an offer sheet
In my opinion that is kind of what happened with Hamilton. Boston ended up getting a similar return to what they would have got had Hamilton been offer sheeted. I think CBJ is on the same rebuild trajectory as Toronto, right now they are looking to clear salary and start fresh. They are a poorly managed group in terms of the cap and i think their first priority is cleaning that up.

Imagine losing one of Jones/Giordano/Brodie/Hamilton to Vegas after giving up assets for Jones.

Wouldn't happen. Obviously Flames would protect 8-1 instead of 7-3-1 if that dream scenario ever actually happened.

Even though Jones is a pipe dream, he would be protected if that was the Flames situation. They would just do the 8/1 instead of the 7/3/1 option.

which means you add Frolik to the cost of acquisition, not to mention making it pretty much impossible cap-wise to round out the top 6

And Holik was actually a really good player who got paid like he was elite due to a really shallow free agency pool one year. It's too bad people remember him for the contract over payment and not for the great 2-way player he was.
Clarkson just ins't that good.... period.

OH my apologies. For some reason in was under the impression the 8-1 option was 8 forwards (ie Oilers) and no defenceman. My bad

In Flash Walken's world, the Flames move Giordano for a forward and run with Jones/Hamilton/Brodie as their top 3.

It is too early to trade Giordano. Not only is he the captain of a very young team, he is still one of the best defensemen in the League, and should continue to play near that level for another couple of years.

He is the best trade chip the team has, he is significantly older than the rest of the core group and his contract has significant trade restrictions starting in a week.
He just came off a great season where he showed he was recovered from his biceps injury, and finished the season with a career high 56 points.
The rest of the core group is 8 years younger or more, and he's the highest paid player on the roster (for now).
All signs point to trade in my world!

I don't want to see that trade happen at this time, just due to the optics it would have league wide regarding potential free agents or possibly NTC trades coming back that it might severely hurt us more.

I wish people would stop talking about moving any of these guys: Giordano, Bennett, Brodie, Gaudreau, Hamilton, or Monahan. They aren't going anywhere.

Especially when it's off topic of the business surrounding a move for the 3rd overall pick.

News UpdateAaron Portzline @Aportzline
#CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen on #Leafs willingness to move No. 1 overall pick: "I don’t think that’s a possibility. I don't ... "
Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
"... know if that will change, but I don’t feel real optimistic about it."

I would agree with moving Gio sooner rather than later otherwise the Flames could end up with another Iggy situation where he gets moved for a pretty poor return.

Or Gio retires as a flame?
Big difference between Gio and Iggy. Gio is going to be 33 on a team full of 20-25 year old players.
When Iggy was 33 all the best players were in a similar age bracket

Ah mystery solved!
Kekalainen has never actually watched Laine or Puljujarvi! Has no clue who they are.
Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
#CBJ Kekalainen won't even describe Laine's or Puljujuarvi's games, lest he tip his hand. "Somebody will have to tell you after the draft."
