To me this is clearly just an easy way for the police to do their "revenue collecting".
I don't agree with fighting in public, but spitting and swearing?? I don't cuss like a trucker but if I want to express myself I will damn well do it regardless of who hears it. Our society here in North America is going down the drain fast........
I hate it, anytime someone is offended by something, they bitch and whine and are then appeased with a bylaw or some other crap. If you can't tolerate someone swearing man up and say something to the perpetrator or stay at home where you won't have to deal with it.
Pansies..................are ruling this country.

No, because there is no such thing as a right to not be offended. Free speech is a tricky subject even when hate speech is involved because the offensive quality of words or opinions is interpreted subjectively. If somebody complains that their furnace was repaired "three f-ing days late" and two people hear it, should the more sensitive person's opinion be considered more important than the other person who is indifferent? Not when it's a matter of law.
I have a much bigger problem with people trying to constrict the actions and language of others than I do with people acting stupidly. People have to accept that there are going to be things that they see and hear, which they aren't going to like or agree with. And, if you don't want your kids to swear in their lives, it is your responsibility to explain to them and convince them why swearing is wrong and should be avoided. Changing everyone else's behaviour is impossible and unjustified.
Furthermore, it is inaccurate to describe the use of swears in the same way that you would even 20 years ago. Words that were formerly considered rude or obscene have simply been absorbed into the common vernacular. Context is what is important, not the actual words themselves.
Finally, the argument that increased swearing is evidence of a "dumbing down" of society is nonsense. That's an argument for form over content. If you want society to be more intelligent, make your argument for better schools or more educational content online or on TV, or even for parents to spend more time teaching their children manners.

But they sure as hell can prove that some dude who's being a drunk a****** is being a drunk a******.
And I love it when people who are so adamant that a law like this is infringing on their rights and then throw out something like "Just eliminate alcohol altogether", like it adds some weight to their argument.
Alcohol is a vice, and when you turn 18 you're given the right to consume it, but with that right comes the expectation that you can be a little bit responsible, and not act like a drunk jerk, or drive, or do any number of things. But if you do do those things you're going to get charged for them.
That's how the world works, you're given certain freedoms with the expecation that while excercising them you won't abuse them, and if you do, then you'll be expected to pay the consequences.
I have the right to drive, but not to speed. I have the right to have a campfire, but not start a 50 ft bonfire in the middle of a campground, I have the right to have a few beers, but not be a drunken beligerant a******.

FWIW, Calgary has had a public behavior bylaw for quite a while now (which does include swearing).

If you could prove that a fine was imposed on you due to your non-hate speech I'd like your chances of having that law invalidated, at least as applied to you. There is a right in this country to free speech, a law that unjustly infringes on that right is invalid.
Now most of these laws skirt that by imposing the punishment for 'public nuisance' and the like, but I guarantee you that there is plenty of evidence that many of these laws target activity that is constitutionally protected. The issue of course is proving that.

I think jeremywilhelm is now in the sin bin for incorrect use of your vs you're. That's a public forum nuisance.
The Cap'n would be there too, but he may have been copying jeremywilhelm and was just going for the effect. So since there is a doubt, he is still free. But I'm sure the mods are watching him him.
(and how does Godwin's Law apply if the nazi is in the tags?)

I think that this should be a self policing thing. If someone swears like an idiot in front of kids or woman folks I should be allowed to issue a fine of one hard punch in the face.

I got a ticket for spitting on the sidewalk after a flames game. Laws like this are the reason our society is turning into one giant snoozefest...

I'm sure Cap'n, you'd be fined for fighting in public under the same set of bylaws.

But we all accept Captain's constant misuse of 'your'. As long as he's keeping hobos in line, he's allowed to spell you're your. Wilhelm on the other hand, spits on sidewalks. Even a redneck like me doesn't do that. At least aim for grass or the street. I mean, sometimes you gotta hawk a loogie, but nobody wants to look at it.
Lol. When I was about 16, I was being a jackass at Heritage train station and I spat on the ground in front of the stairs. An undercover transit cop came and gave me a $50 fine for "expectorating". Seriously though, I'll never forget what she said to me either... She said something like "do you really think you look cool when you do that? Grow up." and she handed me the ticket.

There should be a law against farting in public. Cause you know, farts smell like poop and stink.

On this spitting topic, what's the rule for spitting in grass or on the street? Is that legal? Are some of you outraged by that behavior? What about spitting on the bench at a city owned hockey rink?
There really should be a law that bans muffin tops, they disgust me far more than the yellowest of loogies.

I don't think many people care about that, and the ones who do are going to die soon anyway. But walking down 17th ave and some loser launching a greener right in the middle of the sidewalk is disgusting. And so are muffin tops.

I agree with your first point but I will not be swayed on your second point, unless of course I muffin tops is urban talk for something nasty and not actual tops of muffins.
edit: I have changed my opinion on the 2nd issue at hand. based on exhibit B in the post below. The biggest snot rocket loogie is waaaaaaaay better than that.
