The problem with stupid laws such as this is that dozens of people are going to simply pay the fine before someone gets this law tossed in the courts as a violation of free speech.

I know where this is going, and before the thread fills up with people (who haven't read the whole article) in a huge uproar about how this is just another law to limit our freedom, I'd like to point out that there is no way that this law is going to be used to fine anyone walking down the street who stubs their toe and says "Ah S*** that hurt".
Anyone who's been to Sylvain on say Canada Day weekend knows that the city can fill up with people that are overly drunk and rowdy.
That's what this is designed to cobat, the people that just about every one of us walks by and says "Wow, that guy is an annoying A******"

You don't think this bylaw will be abused? You don't think some A-hole cops are gonna hand out this ticket because someone pisses them off, or they just dont like them.
I got a ticket for spitting on the sidewalk after a flames game. Laws like this are the reason our society is turning into one giant snoozefest...

Yes because spitting on the sidewalk is the key to an exciting and vibrant society.
I think that this should be a self policing thing. If someone swears like an idiot in front of kids or woman folks I should be allowed to issue a fine of one hard punch in the face.

I'm going to once again state my position that no one has ever gotten out of a ticket by telling a cop to "Go f*** himself". In this case, they'll probalby get two. And they'll probably deserve it.
Saying that a law will be abused is not a good reason to not enact it.
I'd be willing to bet there are at least a few cases of cops willfully framing someone of murder, that's a much horrible abuse of a law, should we repeal all murder laws, as one abuse of that, is clearly orders of magnitude worse than cops "abusing" this law by giving out tickets to dudes who were "just having a good time" and "that cop was just a prick on a power trip".

Listen, if we need to start censoring what people are saying, fining them for it, where is our own morals and self control coming into play anymore. Nobody is going to swear because its against the law, not because its just not the right thing to do in public. Whats next? We cant use any sort of racial terms (i mean like calling someone a black person, or a native) because it might offend someone who is of color. This type of control over speech is simply a stepping stone to a future where no one is going to say anything for fear of reprisal by law. If they are upset by drunks getting out of control, then limit the amount of alchohol that may be served in public places, or give the guy a drunk and disorderly, oh but wait! That would mean less money for the community!

Maybe this will reform the use of language. I've walked down the street and heard people swearing up a storm. Not because they're mad or they're proving a point, but because they're boarderline stupid. My ire really gets up when some bonehead is swearing a mile a minute at a hockey game in front of a bunch of little kids. Just because we can swear doesn't mean that we should be using it 50 times a minute.
And the spitting on the sidewalk. Good for any cop that gives a ticket for that. Its not only disgusting its completely unhygenic. And really, the last thing that I want to do is walk through someones snot.

My previous comment obviously missed the point. Basically there was a problem, so they came up with a possible solution.
At Flames games I have come up with quite the bag of things to yell that are all PG-13; and I've also heard some funny ones as people yell their own variations down.
But I don't think a family outing to the beach should be the time that 3 year old Timmy needs to ask his dad what that F-word means.

Serioulsy, as I said before, does anyone actually believe cops are going to give out tickets for someone walking down the street and saying "Ah s*** i stubbed my toe?".
If you really think that's the intent of this law then you are the most paranoid person in the world, and you probably didn't read the article, quick, how many times is swearing mentioned outside of the headline? ONCE, and it's a passing reference, because it's completely inconsequential.
It's a public nuisaince law, that includes things like pissing or crapping in public, fighting, bullying, and graffiti. Basically it's giving cops another tool to crack down on the jerks who party there and tear up the town durring the long weekends. Swearing is being used as an example of unruly behaviour. No one is going to get a ticket for "Swearing" dude, but I'll be a lot of drunk jerks who also happen to be shouting profanities (hence drawing attention to themselves) will get a few public nuissance tickets, and I doubt many people will argue that they don't deserve them.

It was snowing out...
Either way, you dont like the swearing, man up and say something. Sometimes people get carried away and dont notice other people around. I've yelled out "shoot the puck you ######s" at a flames game, and i was surrounded by a bunch of special needs men and women, when i had this pointed out to me, i apologised and modulated my cheering/yelling. So no everyone you think is a classless buffoon is doing to to be willfully ignorant.

You should hear the swearing that goes on on a golf course. Christ i'd be in the poor house if i got fined for every tee shot i hooked or sliced, or every ball i topped or put in the water. Thank god they don't police golf courses.

To those who haven't read the article.
THIS IS NOT A SWEARING BYLAW.
This is a public nuissance bylaw that covers a whole range of things from fighting, pissing in public, bullying, and graffiti.
Swearing was used in the headline to grab your attention.
Seriously, does anyone actually belive ANY cop will write you a ticket for "Swearing" which I'm guessing doesn't even exist, it's just an example of being a public nuissance?
Why would they do that, when chances are if you are swearing enough that he cares, he can probaly write you a ticket for drunk & dissorderly conduct?

We already have public disturbance and drunkness charges, if it really is that bad, the cops should be handing one of those out.

I don't care if it was hailing flaming moon rocks. Keep your snot and boogers and germs and spit to yourself. Its a sidewalk not a toilet. Thats just gross.
Swearing used to be used to emphasize a point or emotion. Now it used like a bad shot with a machine gun. Its part of the dumbing down of society. I don't care if the cops fine you for it. I doubt that we'll see very many tickets built exclusively around swearing. But f#ck man people should have better manners.
