Imo some of the nicest properties in the Midwest still ring Detroit.
Great trade by Yzerman. Really like what he's building in Detroit.

Can't agree with this affecting Doiron. It's revisionist history at its finest.
He makes the best deals he can at the time he makes them.
DeBrincat not wanting to sign long term wasn't and couldn't be known at the time that the trade with Chicago was made.
Further, I don't get how the Chychrun trade gets rolled into the DeBrincat trade to Detroit.
Garbage journalism looking to create fire where there is no smoke.

Nah, it was a dumb trade at the time.Debrincat not re-signing was an obvious risk.
And it doesn't seem unreasonable to consider the Chychrun trade if we're discussing the GM.

Canadian fan bases are rabid and impatient. Everyone thinks they know what is best for the team, and it turns the GM's job into a pressure cooker.

I don't agree.
It's why he is a GM and you are sitting on your couch debating trades with me.
Doiron made his team better NOW, that's his job.

When you factor in what Ottawa paid a year ago with the results they had this is an underwhelming return. Looking at the sign and trades the Flames traded the best player and got the best return in Tkachuk. The jets got a nice package for Dubois. The Sens didn’t do well here but neither did Debrincat getting only 4 years. I suppose at 29 he will be in line for another max payday so it could work out well for him.

I completely disagree with the take the rebuild was rushed in Ottawa. Once they paid Tkachuk the clock was ticking on their window so they started to push chips in the middle last year by acquiring a 25 year old Debrincat and 25 year old Chychrun to be people that they hope would be part of the long term core.
The Flames window was the Gaudreau extension and for Ottawa it is this current Tkachuk deal which they have 5 years left. Lucky for them they may have another franchise player in Stutzle.

Late first, is Detroit all of the sudden beating out Toronto, Tampa, Florida, Carolina, NYR, New Jersey, Islanders, Boston, Buffalo or Pittsburgh? Suspect that pick is a top 12 pick. Ottawa themselves are also a better team on paper than the Red Wings.

The pick is Detroit's choice of Boston or Detroit's 2024 1st or in the case Boston is top 10 in 2024, Detroit's 2024 1st or Boston's 2025 1st.

Exactly, this is why we get situations where we sign multiple aging vets to retirement contracts to keep them here while not being a contender and rarely, if ever, properly rebuild.
Ottawa is the closest to properly rebuilding, but even for them it's mostly due to prior financial constraints that caused sell offs.

Actually, it shows that players needing contracts have less value that hoped for.

That's a better long-term option than paying him for the years his production will be in decline.

This is the disadvantage hitting canadian markets. These players are prepared to hit the market with preferred destinations in mind, that are generally known, so it's hard to extract great value.
|
Should be evident by now that Canadian GMs are playing with fire trading for American stars on short contracts. And GMs in general need to recognize that players are increasingly exercising leverage to choose where they play. The NHL is changing, and team braintrusts need to adapt to the new reality.
