Well...yes and no.
Its the first Hispanic Superhero, so hes got that going for him, which is nice.
I look at it like this:
You're right. That movie is going to bomb.
From the trailer it still looks interesting. It might be a fun but financially disastrous movie.

And another thought, maybe with a D-lister it'll give them more of a flexible storyline? People arent going to be so caught up in the canon or the origin story.
Kind of like what Gunn did with GotG?
I dunno, but with all the other putrid crap DC's been pumping out it wont kill them to go a little 'off the board.'

I don't see how it's off the board at all. From the trailer we see an awkward teenager get superpowers, struggle with them at first, then becomes a hero. Off the top of my head that mimics Spiderman (multiple times), Ms. Marvel, and a boatload of X-Men characters. Then he fights a bad guy with the exact same powers that he has, which has been done to death. There's literally nothing new or interesting about Blue Beetle that I can think of

Whenever he is cast in any project it should be mandatory that he has to bitch-slap someone at some point in the film.
"Its contractually obligated Mr. Smith...dont make me tap the contract!!"

It should be the poster and box cover for every release. Smith slapping the other lead. Then you could have a whole collection on your shelf of Smith slapping people.

To be fair, the movie looks aimed at a relatively young audience. It's got a similar target demographic to Ms. Marvel.
What gets me is how much money DC spent on the movie. If they were smart, they could have kept the budget lower and turned a moderate profit on a kid-friendly movie that would probably get a ton of streams. Instead, they throw a $120 million dollar budget at the movie.
If the movie does about $250 million worldwide plus does some decent streaming numbers, then I guess it's worth it, but it seems like the way to go would have been to streamline things.

Agreed.
Also, they need to make a film about Underground Russian Slap-fighting competitions and a courageous American must compete to save the honour of his country and free his brother from tyranny...
It shall be called...."Bloodslap!"

Ugh, watched The Flash movie, that was terrible. It was too much to hope that the terrible CGI could be saved by good writing.

Apparently The Flash now owns the title of biggest superhero bomb of all time
Quote:
The film has floundered financially, suffering the worst drop in box office returns from first to second week in DC history (72.5%) after an already disappointing opening weekend.
…
Because of The Flash's reported $220 million budget (and $150 million promotional budget), the movie is likely set to lose over $200M for Warner Bros. which would be the biggest financial loss suffered by a studio because of a superhero film.
Ezra Miller's long-gestating DC solo outing earned a meager $5.23 million in its third weekend in theaters, bringing its domestic total to a lean $99 million.

Yeah...to sum it up succinctly...what a mess. It pretty much fell into every trap that everyone was initially worried about.
Too much going on, too many characters, sacrifice of plot and story for 'member berries' and Miller just couldnt carry it.
It was a smart idea to involve Keaton, he was easily the best part of the film, but he just wasnt enough. The whole thing was a long, plodding, colossal mess.
Miller is fine in small doses but he gets annoying real fast when he is your anchor character and actor and even then...on top of all of that he's saddled with poor writing and a pretty poorly executed story.
Further...DC just cant find their 'sweet spot.' Its either constant lame jokes all the time or dark, grim and brooding all the time, there is no balance and it takes you out of the story.
I said it about Batman vs. Superman, I said it about Justice League, but DC just takes Prime Source Material and just wipes their ass with it.
That....was awful.
So, where to rank it? I think it was still better than 'Wakanda Forever' and maybe better or on par with 'Quantumania?' but...not high praise.
The Flash sucked. Straight up.

Today is the 15th anniversary of The Dark Knight being released in theatres. The film is still the best superhero movie ever, and is miles better than superhero movies being released recently.

Wasn't there a time when they were just going to kill the Flash movie? Like, just not release it? I mean, they knew it was a stinker and yet changed their minds and released it anyway?

Superhero movies really peaked in 2008 with The Dark Knight and Iron Man.

Far below Wakanda Forever and below Quantumania, at least those had some redeeming moments or performances or some quality VFX.
At this point I just group everything by "would watch again" and "would not watch again", and they all fall into the would not watch again category.

I don't think there is a single genre that has as well defined of a peak as the superhero genre and Infinity War. Already it seems unfathomable for anyone to repeat a perfectly executed, decade long build with a satisfying pay-off and also be the #6 box office performer of all time.

They really needed to take a break after Infinity War. Maybe a couple short TV series.
But, the almighty dollar ruins all, as is usual.

It's hard to say Infinity War was a "peak" for the whole genre, when you have The Dark Knight taking home oscars and getting 8 nominations.
