Lazar. I suppose it might make a waste of the trade but I would certainly trade a second for Neal. I would probably trade Lazar plus a second for Neal too. Not even sure the Knights would want Lazar anyway.

Alzner is going to make in the range of 4.5-5.5M, and is not good. We just shed Wideman, and Alzner may not be THAT bad now - but he absolutely will be by the mid-point of whatever contract he gets this summer.
Stay away.

Flames management obviously feels different as I don't believe the Flames have a habit of trading 2nd round picks for dime a dozen players. Lazar will not be left unprotected.

They didn't have to trade their 2nd round pick. They could have kept it and used it on a player yet they like Lazar enough that they went out of their way to trade for him. I think some of you need to come to grips with the fact that management likes the kid.

in the grand scheme, if all it cost Calgary in expansion was a 2nd round pick in a weak draft, I'd probably be ok with that.
Sort of hoping Stajan is picked though so that there is a genuine, attainable spot for Janko.

No, I know that. Perhaps I'm being obtuse. What I'm saying is that Neal is worth the second we traded away for Lazar plus Lazar. Maybe Nashville even likes Lazar for that matter although I wasn't proposing him as a part of the trade. But why not trade Lazar plus to Nashville? That might be appealing given that they are still likely to lose another solid young player that is better than Lazar.
Then who really cares who we lose in the expansion draft? We can leave Brouwer and Stajan as our best NHL-ready players and pray the Knights take one of them.

Alzner as a #4 D (partner for Brodie) isn't a fit, especially when GG seems to stress the importance of Righty/Lefty D pairings in his system.
Alzner as a #5 D isn't a fit either, as he will command 2nd pairing money. Will screw up the cap.
We also already have Kulak, Wotherspoon and Kylington as young LHD's who will fight for 3rd pairing LHD minutes next season at a fraction of the cost of an Alzner, and we also have Bartkowski as a vet to push and compete with the younger guys for that spot.
What we need is to bring back Stone as a UFA (or sign Franson if you believe he's better than Stone), or trade for an upgrade on both of those guys as #4 RHD options.
Then we need to find a vet RHD to compete with Andersson for the 3rd pairing RHD spot. Engelland, Holzer, Postma....UFA's like that who won't command term and $$.
