I'm double vaccinated myself, but I understand why some people were skittish about vaccines that were approved on an emergency basis without the usual testing and regulatory process. At this point, there's enough information to show that those fears can be put to rest – but everyone is in their own echo chamber, everyone is being lied to by one form of media or another, and nobody can be sure whom to trust.

On one extreme are officials (not all officials, but a powerful enough minority) who rely on a skewed interpretation of carefully selected studies to promote draconic restrictions in civil society, with no end date and no exit strategy. On the other side, well, conspiracy theorists do what they always do. The rest of us get caught in the middle.

I'm not worried about the Flames' season. I'm worried about a complete breakdown in society because the channels of communication are no longer trusted.

Taxi squads would have been helpful for sure but in the flames case here it looks to be a perfect storm. Don’t think they will fully cancel but I’d be shocked if there isn’t a pause here shortly.

I'm fine as long as they wait for San Jose to pass the Oilers before they cancel the regular season and shut it down until playoffs...for teams who were in a playoff spot of course.

I have a really hard time thinking that they would shut the season down, given the other 3 major pro sports leagues are powering/have powered forward. How could the NHL ever justify that. I could see a pause potentially if so many players get put into protocol that teams can’t ice full rosters.

I’ll be pretty pissed if they cancelled the season tbh. Has anyone been to the US lately - they’re full bore ahead. Get vaccinated if you’re concerned and you dramatically reduce your risk. Don’t if you don’t want to. But we must go on.

We don't know anything about the severity of the Flames players' illnesses. The NHL overall is pretty cautious about covid. They are requiring testing for all close contacts, which is stricter testing than the general population receives. So they are probably catching a lot of asymptomatic cases.

The way these strains are mutating around the vaccines, it's likely that most people will get covid regardless of vaccination status, and the NHL is no different. A shut down is just going to delay that inevitability.
