I don't mind the idea of trading a pick for a young reclamation project.
20 pts in 76 games last season is not terrible.
Pretty hard to feel strongly about this trade though.

Trading a vet for a 2nd is better than losing him for nothing
Trading a 2nd for a 21 year old that has already surpassed the average 2nd rounder isn't much of a risk
the numbers don't lie...opinion is one thing
odds favor the Flames there is no debate
maybe the Sens hit a homerun, very unlikely

His QO should be ~$875k. I don't think he will get more than $1.2 mil (Colborne's cap hit from 2014-2016)

Alright, I didn't know he had mono. That's fair.
I disagree about the 2nd round pick though. Mystery Box traded for a Mystery Box we already know isn't going to be a high end player.

Maybe he'll be a bigger, faster, stronger, smilier, more talented Colborne?

You continue to miss the fact there's such a low percentage that 2nd round pick turns into even what Lazar is now, never mind the fact Treliving is on the Fan960 right now talking about how much room they feel he has to grow.

What about protecting Stone, if he can be signed to a good contract? I'd think that would be a higher priority for the Flames. Much harder to fill the nr 4 D spot than anything Lazar might bring.

If they sign and protect Stone then they can only protect 4 forwards, because they aren't exposing any of Gio, Brodie or Dougie Hamilton.

Either the Flames protect 7 forwards and 3 defensemen or 8 total skaters. The first option is the best for the Flames because of the number of forwards they'd like to protect. That means we'd have to pick 3 defensemen which is already a bit of a guarantee. It'll be interesting how the Knights respond to what Treliving does with Stone.

You continue to ignore the fact that I'd rather a small shot at good player over a good shot at someone turning into a player like Chaisson

I really liked Lazar in 2013. TBH I was shocked to see how poorly he has done this season. The mono explanation is actually quite a relief.

Norm!

IF we protect a 4th defenseman we can only protect 4 forwards so we'd protect Mony, Johnny, Backs and Bennett and probably lose a Bennett or Frolik

Well Stone is a UFA so I guess if they sign him first
but losing a 2nd in a terrible draft to Vegas while protecting our entire team wouldn't be the worst thing to happen

While there can be an argument as to the value of a 2nd round pick, this comparison is inaccurate and misleading for a few reasons. Firstly, we don't know he won't amount to a high end player. A lot of high end players were late bloomers. It's unlikely, but hardly definitive one way or the other. Secondly, a 2nd round pick will likely not play nearly as many games or put up as many points in the NHL as Lazar has, this is just a statistical fact (as has been pointed out previously). So it's more like we traded: A mystery box that will likely be empty, but might not be for an opened mystery box that has been proven to be better than an empty mystery box.

Jumbo Joe had 4 assists his first season...more than a decade later he had 92
I mean if you are gonna start pulling out the greatest 2nd round picks of all time I guess its comparable

Yea, you've said that over and over and over.
Treliving is speaking at length right now as to the amount of time and resources they've spent scouting him and the attributes he has that they feel show he has room to grow into a very valuable character player.
I'll take their word over your endlessly pessimistic view any time, especially when your hyperbolic take is based on absolutely over-valuing a low percentage draft pick.

Sign Stone after the expansion draft. He's a pending ufa, Flames should/will use that to their advantage.
