This has been argued twice, but what better positioning could he be in?
Given human evolution, it is physically impossible to see through solid objects. Kris Russell, last I checked, is a human being, which qualifies as a solid object. Said solid object obstructed Ortio's view, and then collapsed to block a shot (which further obstructed Ortio's view of the play and shot).
There is no amount of shifting, head tilt, straining, etc. that is going to compensate for the obstruction...especially at the pace of NHL hockey.

He actually was good enough to make the Flames, they just thought he would slip through waivers. Anyone that thinks Mason Raymond or Brandon Bollig did more to earn a spot on the team are as delusional as Bob Hartley.
But fine, give up a guy that was gonna pot 30 points playing on the 4th line. A guy that goes out and brings so much energy that it shifts momentum to his team. Not to mention his role as a good PKer.
We sure made the right decision.

The Paul Byron conversation has been beaten to death but if you think that NHL teams don't know who he is and that's why he fell you are insane.

Yeah, could use better goaltending but when you have the fantastic pair of Russell Wideman serving up pizzas in the high slot.... that doesn't tend to help...

Goalies look around their defensemen all time, even guys as big as Byfuglien.
Anyways I did think you said you weren't changing your mind so I will leave at that was a weak goal by Ortio and coupled with the other 3 it has been a poor night for him so far (and saying poor might be being kind).

Sure it is. A game doesn't just happen as a solid chunk. In the macro, there is the micro, and in sports the parts make up the whole.
If a single avoidable goal (part/micro) trumps the whole, then there is much more going on that needs to be corrected in order to be successful.
The first goal wasn't the difference maker tonight.

No he hasn't. Flames fans including me badly wanted him to be the solution but it appears he's not right now. He's been just as bad as the other two.
The Wideman/Russell pairing needs to be split up so the suck is halved in different pairings.

I would not send Wideman and Russell to Edmonton tonight. Both of them will be better serve the team by staying in Calgary

They don't. Playoffs are no longer an option. Time to reset expectations as fans. Realize we are further ahead than we'd have dreamed before last season started, be thankful for the experience our young guys gained last year, make smart decisions with our expiring assets and just focus on developing and the continued progression of our young core.
Not saying it doesn't hurt, but time to accept the nay Sayers last year were right, but also look at the positives, our young core is way better than we imagined they could be before last year.

Did you ever think maybe the reason for the defense making alot of mistakes is because of lack of confidence in their goaltending? It has to be tough knowing every little mistake you make could result in a goal because you don't even know if your goalie can make a routine save.

Barnum & Bailey created what our goaltending has been all season ... A three ring circus. Complete gong show by the defense also hasn't helped either. but when you can't make a save and you can't play defense. It kinda hard to win games . Look how well that plan worked out for Edmonton the past decade.

Maybe these goalies come back mentally, maybe they don't.
I think Flames can't wait to find out. If they were not desperate last week they will be soon. I mean we have three sub 0.900 goalies now. WTH?
Flames will never be lucky enough to get the 1st overall, if they are a lottery team. So there is no good thing that will come form finishing last. Nothing.
