Right - it's not like a 4th rounder is a huge thing to give up and it's not like 1.8Mx1 for a bottom six winger is a huge contract, so there isn't a ton of downside here. It's just confusing. Why bother?
The only explanation I guess is that the Flames' pro scouts think last year was an anomaly and he's closer to the double digit goal / ~30 point version, but even there I feel like there are guys who will be available for 1.8M in the bargain bin later in the summer. That's more than what Duclair signed for last season, for example.

You’re right somethings off, I reposted this one but I’ll get the refreshed one that should factor in this season

I'm not going to pretend that I've watched this player under a microscope.
I haven't.
But if he's 83rd percentile defensively five on five while getting the tough matchups (91st percentile) he's not a nothing player.

It's also a contract that is pretty comparable to plenty of other players at Backlund's level. It's about what Boston pays Coyle for less points, what Edmonton pays RNH for a couple more points and worse D, what Pageau makes, etc. It's a tad high but not stupidly so.

I just don't know how all the categories fit into the final "grade". Maybe they're weighted differently, maybe they have nothing to do with it. I just don't get it. I also don't know if it's position based.

You need to improve the bottom half of your roster and the top half of your roster.
It's not a fork in the road.
If they trade for replacement level players I'll be on board in complaining about expending picks. If they have trouble getting UFAs to sign in Calgary and a 4th gets them a shut down winger I'm all for the positive step forward.
Don't think that precludes adding to the top six in any way.

I suppose we will see as if they are going to add a top 6 forward it will likely be this weekend as I don't see much available in free agency.

Those were 10 years ago (9 for Kulak). If we are extending time, on that basis the Flames did their best work in rounds that don't exist any more. Fleury, Loob, Suter, Hrdina, Makarov, Titov were all 8-12 rounders.
But lately, Dube, Andersson, Kylington (I still like him). Heck, Granlund has 335 games. And then there's Joe N.

I saw this thread and had nightmares that the Flames somehow traded back for Pitlick after trading him away.

Two picks really, one to get him and the 5th to dump him I think.
Another whiff by the pro scouts, let’s hope they learn from it going forward.

Surprised at how bad he was. Sure hope a mid round pick gets us a lot better player at the deadline.

Decent player who has his career derailed by injuries I think. His initial problem was being drafted by Edmonton - that will set any player back.
