The Burke quote was pretty blunt, but all Sven had to do was improve the stuff he talked about. Instead he didn't. And he did complain about being at the development camp.
I'm pretty sure you can find on the record comments from other gms about other players equally as blunt.

Yeah, I don't know how Baertschi could ever live this down, or bear to show his face.
I see MUCH harsher criticism than this on virtually every article that I send away fro peer review. This looks remarkably analogous to reviews that I write for graduate applications and theses.

Because apparently trading an underwhelming prospect to a rival now magically makes him a top 6 player who will come back to haunt us one day.

I am relieved. Not all 1st round picks are the same, and not all player - coach relationships are the same. If it's a question between Hartley and Sven, that's an easy choice. This situation wasn't headed anywhere productive, at least not in Cgy, so BT sold as high as he could. Which, in a deep draft, isn't too shabby. Yes, if he was a fresh first rounder, I would hate this deal. But he's not, and it isn't just a matter of waiting for his hockey game to develop - there were other issues. Some here are worried that Sven will make us pay... I'm of the belief that in 5 years, we will look at this deal as very reasonable.

Meh, we don't see the Canucks until next season. A little context for the whole trade to a Rival thing.

Would you have traded Sven for Petry?

Hearing he would not re-sign and demanded a trade my guess is they got their best offer. Too bad it was the Canucks and only a 2nd

Don't remember our third 2nd rounder going for Elomo?

With Sven demanding a trade, and saying he wouldnt re-sign here that changes a lot. He felt entitled even though he never earned it
He's not a good fit for the Calgary Flames
He could have worked hard and earned a spot like Jooris and the rest of the players earning call ups, but I guess the attitude problems are a real problem with him
Too bad, he was really talented in junior. His downfall has only been his own fault, the Flames have offered up a lot of opportunities for him and others the last couple seasons

Selling high. I doubt the guy is still playing in North American in three years.

The Canucks are going to coddle and baby Sven Baertschi like the Flames should have done. Different people respond to different treatment. You have to nurture some and be tough on others.
Canucks are going to throw a bunch of ice time at Baertschi and let him figure it out in the NHL and they're going to reap the rewards.
The Flames should have kept him up in the NHL and struggled through his growth with him. That was the only way this was going to work.
Canucks GM Jim Benning already telling the media that he expects Baertschi to play in their Top 6.

|
Or he could happily go home.
I think the time frame and considerations for foreign nationals could be a bit different.
Sven could be thinking that he needs to make the NHL by a certain age, and if not, he'll go home to Switzerland and play locally. He'll enjoy his job and enjoy his environment. Nothing wrong with that.
Unlike a previous prospect, at least the kid was honest in his conversations with management.

I don't really want to get into this again, since it doesn't matter anymore, but can you show me other examples where management has ripped into their own prospect that badly?

Fine with the trade. BUT WHY TO VANCOUVER?!
It is far too tempting for maliciously malevolent hockey gods.
