Somethin' had to change. Calgary's got some depth in the system now, and Sven just wasn't living up to what he could have. If he wanted out, then the best thing for everyone is to get some value for him.
Question for those in the know: Do you think the Flames will try to move some of these seconds/thirds to get a first? Or is depth/quantity the game right now?

In my time of following the Flames we've never had 4 picks in the first two rounds I don't think. Especially not in a deep draft. This will afford Treliving some excellent flexibility as 2nd rounders in deep drafts can end up working out great and now we have extra rolls of the dice.
It affords Treliving the possibility of packaging picks to move up in the 1st round to get the guy we really like.
It affords Treliving the possibility of packing picks to acquire a second 1st rounder.
It affords Treliving the possibility of trading a 2nd rounder to a team desperate for a pick in order to get a legitimate NHLer or prospect.
Tons of flexibility. And even if none of the come to fruition we have 4 rolls of the dice in the first two rounds in a deep draft. Love it from a draft perspective.
Really Johnny Gaudreau is the one who made Sven redundant and expendable. And Baertschi did nothing to cement his role going forward. There was literally no room for Baertschi with all the other prospects impressing more.

Hrrrm... I thought he might get a chance to play now that Glencross is gone. Oh well...
I'd wish Sven good luck but I hate the Canucks, so:
Dear Sven,
I hope you are waived early next season so that you can be picked up by the Penguins and get to play with Sydney Crosby.
Love,
fZ

Calgary were the ones trying to shop baertschi per benning
Benning doesn't even seem to really know baertschi's situation. Says he's a fast player and doesn't really know what happened in his development.
Seems like Burke and Treliving really wanted to trade him. Especially to a division rival I hope they know what they are doing

My take is that if Sven wanted out, fine. The Flames weren't going to change their development and team approach to let him acquire a spot, nor should they.
Because he's waiver eligible next year, the Flames risked getting zero or a Colborne like return. So the value is correct IMO.
Yes, it's a bit of gamble to trade with the Canucks, but it's the same gamble for them - if Sven doesn't turn out and the second does, the Flames win. And the Canucks don't have great success in dealing with problem child prospects (Hodgson, Kassian).
And this is a move by Treliving to bolster the long term goals without sacrificing anyone on the current roster. Moving Sven doesn't upset the room in Calgary. Heck, if Sven was mouthing off about not belonging in Addie, it doesn't upset that room either.

uh, this quote annoys the hell out of me. A player who has 8 goals in his third AHL season and who has been passed by MANY forward prospects on the depth chart over the last couple of years shouldn't talk about how there was no solution found for him ... the solution was to bust his ass in the AHL and force the club's hands. I was always a fan of Sven, but it's baffling that a player cannot see the case of Josh Jooris and recognize what hard work can do for you in pro hockey.
Have fun in Utica, kid.

Worried posters don't need to go as far as hoping the worst for Sven now that he's a Canuck. You can just hope that Sven plays as he as to date in the NHL and Calgary will come out ahead.

This is a great trade, the guy is a sinking ship. For perspective, Colbourne went 16th and we got him for a 4th rounder. People need to chill, guy was a dud pick.

For me it's not just that Baertchi got passed by so many of our other prospects, it's also that he's exactly what we don't need right now; a small, soft winger. Gaudreau is already in, Granlund is making a case for himself, we really cant' fit too many guys like that on the roster. We have size and strength issues as it is. The writing was on the wall for a good long while now, so the only real surprise was dealing him to the Canucks.
Who knows, maybe he'll fit better there. I honestly don't care that much. Treliving was right to move him, and the return seems about what you'd expect. Solid move in my books.
|
Yeah I was tempted to bring up the size issue as well. With Gaudreau and Hudler on the team we didn't really have room for another small, soft, skilled forward. And Sven was clearly the worst of those three. Ideally you have to mix some size in. Ideally you'd have a power forward or two on your top two lines. Monahan brings size. Bennett brings a power game with decent size. Ferland brings size and a power game and still might have 2nd line potential. Poirier brings size, power and speed too.
This was Sven's year to force his way on to the team given his waiver issues next year. And he failed to do so.

When I first saw this, my initial thought was I'd rather have risked losing him on waivers next year for the chance to see if he could be a regular versus getting the second round pick. Firgured that would be the better bet, and I still do think that.
However, given the news he'd requested a trade, needed to make the move. This info further solidifies that Sven's attitude has been the issue all along. I have no issues with how he's been handled (at least publicly) by our organization. And with the all the little comment over the past couple of years and this trade request, clearly Sven isn't yet mentally ready for the NHL challenge nor is he a cultural fit with this group. That's not to say he can't turn it around and change is outlook, and clearly the Flames were willing to work with him and see if he could, but his lack of maturity forced their hand. Seems like Sven's got a victim mentality that he'll have to get over if he wants to make it. Only problem is, now that he's in Vancouver, I won't be cheering for him to do so.

Not a surprise Sven was traded although I figured it would be at the draft. Seeing other players were getting called up over him you had to know his time was nearing an end with the organization. Truth is that he was a really good junior player that had entitlement issues that never seized his opportunities when they were provided. Swiss players just don't seem to work out to their draft billing although Niederreiter is making a case as a solid NHLer.

Given his comments and the statement that he wasn't going to re-sign, excellent return. All said, not happy he went to Vancouver.

Treliving said Sven had no interest resigning.
Hearing that glad they moved him while he has value
